WINES
Elektrisch Riesling 2020, Rheinhessen, Germany
Varietal: Riesling, Alc. 10%
The Rheinhessen region has gone from being derided as the land of Liebfraumilch to being the white-hot, super star of Germany. Florian Fauth, the winemaker of Elektrisch, happens to be the brother-in-law of Klaus Peter Keller, one of the pioneers who helped make the Rheinhessen one of the superstar regions of Germany. It is a delicate art to bring out the right amounts of sweetness and acidity in Riesling, and Fauth is able to do it, while crafting wines that are harmonious and vibrant. Mouthwatering acidity, citrusy aromatics, and flavors of granny smith apples will make you appreciate a wine that is fruity in the right way. This is an impressive wine that shows incredible value. This biodynamic, fruit-forward halbtrocken (off-dry) Riesling Kabinett from the Rheinhessen is juicy and thirst-quenching, showing tart citrus and wet stones, marked by lively acidity. Pairs well with sushi, Asian food, and salty blue cheese, like Stilton. $17.99
Domaine les Capreoles Cossinelle Rose, France
Varietal: Gamay, Alc. 13%
Capreoles is a newer Beaujolais estate that has made a big impression on both sides of the Atlantic. Cedric and Catherine Lescarreaux took over abandoned vineyards and began to farm them organically and biodynamically. Their daughter Margot loved finding cossinelles (ladybugs) in the vineyards on the eve of their first harvest in 2014. They thought the fresh and colorful childish name seemed perfect to reflect the spirit of their rosé.
Pale pink, fruity and very aromatic, it will seduce with its freshness and mouthfeel. It is light, fresh, and lively, the Gamay grape at its best. Pairs well with cured meats, Caprese salad, soft and tangy cheeses. $19.99
Azienda Agricola Platinetti Guido, Ghemme, Italy
We’re pouring two wines from Azienda Agricola Platinetti Guido, a vineyard started at the beginning of the 20th century by Carlo Platinetti and Gaudenzio Fontana, respectively the great- grandfather and grandfather of the current owners. They cultivated vineyards in the most suitable areas around Ghemme and vinified in the winery inside Castello Ricetto, in the heart of the town. World War II interrupted the agricultural pursuits of these valleys, causing a drastic decline in the number of vineyards in what was one of the regions of Italy with the most grapevines, and famed for the unique quality of the wines it produced. During the first half of the 1970s, Gaudenzio’s son Mario resumed cultivation of his father’s historic plots. With the help of his father-in-law, Guido, who was Carlo’s son, he founded Azienda Agricola Platinetti Guido and began planting new Nebbiolo grapevines on Ronco al Maso, the hill nearest the town. The vineyard is now owned and run by Mario’s three children, Stefano, Maria, and Andrea Fontana. Andrea, who graduated from the Alba School of Oenology, tends the vineyards and manages all the winemaking processes himself, together with his son Pietro.
Platinetti Guido Ghemme 2018
Varietal: Nebbiolo, Alc. 14%
Despite regulations allowing the addition of up to 15% of Vespolina or Bonarda grapes, Platinetti’s Ghemme DOCG is produced using solely this wine region’s most famed grape variety namely, Nebbiolo. Only the best clusters from the vineyard are used. Traditionally, these few select rows are left until last during the harvest in order to let the grapes fully mature on the plant. Aging continues for two years in large oak barrels, and then is rounded off with a year in the bottle before being released. This wine should be opened at least an hour before drinking. Intense garnet colour with excellent transparency. It offers a rich and assorted range of aromas, distinguished by hints of red fruit jam, blueberry and mulberry. This is followed by hints of balsamic, surrounded by delicate ferrous minerals and ferrous nuances. On the palate there are intriguing notes of licorice and tobacco. Pairs well with beef, veal, and game meats. $39.99
Platinetti Guido Colline Novaresi DOC Vespolina
Varietal: Vespolina Alc. 12.5%
The Vespolina grapes are the first to be harvested and are fermented in contact with the skins for a maximum of five days in steel vats. After racking, aging continues in steel vats for a minimum of six months followed by further bottle aging for at least another four months. The intense fruity, youthful and slight minerality of the bouquet gives way to a smooth, fresh mouthfeel, which is enlivened by its light, pleasant acidity. A balance of light flavors is interwoven with a decisive spiciness, which is a characteristic of this grape variety. Pairs well with fresh cheeses, pork sausages with herbs, and grilled chicken. $24.99
Doris Red Table Wine, Sonoma Valley, California
Varietals: Zinfandel, Barbera, Merlot, Alc. 14.5%
Originally from Providence, Dan O’Brien honed his wine knowledge behind the bar and as a sommelier in Boston before being recruited to build the wine cellar for the Michelin-starred Cavallo Point in Marin, California. While living in California, Dan’s passion for wine grew, and he began working harvests at L’Aventure in Paso Robles and Larkmead in Napa, eventually becoming a consultant for new wineries in Napa and Sonoma. Using his knowledge, experience and connections, Dan founded his own label, Gail Wines, in 2013 with the goal of highlighting both classic and off-the-beaten-path varieties across the Sonoma Valley. He works with organically farmed fruit from Bennett Valley, Carneros, Moon Mountain District, Sonoma Valley, and Sonoma Mountain. In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, Dan makes wines from traditional grapes like Chardonnay and Merlot as well as lesser utilized varietals like Chenin Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Franc and Barbera. Doris is Gail Wines’ sister label, a nod to the European table wines Dan’s great-aunt Doris would serve to friends and family while hosting traditional Italian-American feasts in her backyard. A blend of Zinfandel, Barbera, and Merlot from fruit sourced in the Sonoma Valley, it is deep purple in color with incredibly expressive aromas of black cherries, fresh earth, plum, and dried cranberry. The palate is sleek and well-defined with power and depth that is balanced by soft, graceful tannins and lively acidity. The finish is juicy and bursting with ripe fruit flavors. Pairs well with steak, barbecued meats. $23.99
