FINE WINE TASTING @ SAVOUR WITH HARRY ZARKADES, CO-OWNER MAIN STREET WINES

We always enjoy it when Harry, co-owner of Main Street Wines, comes to Savour to pour his selections.  Main Street specializes in quality wines at a reasonable price, many of which are organic, fully natural, or biodynamically farmed.  Along with some great choices for the weekday dinner table, Harry is pouring a spectacular 2016 (one of the greatest vintages of our time) Brunello and a remarkable Chianti from the vineyards of Rufina near Florence, Italy.  Come join us on a beautiful fall day and celebrate the season.

 WINES

Just B, Albariõ, RiasBaixas, Spain

Varietal:AlbariñoAlc.13%

Belén Varela grew up among the grape vines her grandfather and father grew in Galicia. They sold their grapes to winemakers, but Belen always wanted to make her own wine. She left her family vineyard to learn winemaking and went on to head another Albariño winery before returning to her roots in the Salnés Valley to take over her father’s vineyard, a stone’s throw from the Atlantic Ocean. At Just B, Belén and her wine expert, Cayetano Otero, follow the traditions of organic and biodynamic winemaking. Their goal is to make an Albariño that demonstrates its well-defined and unique Atlantic coast terroir and expresses the identity of the true Albariño grape. This wine, made from 40- to 60-year-old vines, is fresh, fruity, and sharp. It has salinity, minerality, concentrated flavors, and balanced acidity. Hints of apricot, peaches, grapefruit, melon, flint, white pepper, beeswax, wet stones and biscuits are present in the nose and on the palate.

Pairs well with leafy greens, pesto, fish dishes.$17.99

Duck Pond Pinot Gris, Dundee, Oregon

Varietal:Pinot Gris Alc. 13%

Established in Dundee, Oregon, in 1993 in Willamette Valley and Dundee Hills AVAs, Duck Pond makes wines that are organically farmed and hand-harvested. Winemaker Julia Cattrall’s mission is to preserve and uphold the natural beauty and legacy of Oregon’s wines, and to craft delicious wines free of harmful chemicals. Duck Pond is the first commercially farmed vineyard in Oregon to have received the Clean Label Project Purity Award. Duck Pond uses sustainable and organic farming practices, rigorous testing protocols, ingredient labeling, and third-party testing and certification. Bright aromas of pear, lemon and peach jump from the glass of Pinot Gris along with hints of herbs, delicate flowers and minerals. The fresh fruit flavors of crisp citrus and pear are balanced with a light texture. The fruity finish is rounded out with a mineral-focused complexity.

Pairs well with fresh vegetables, sushi, and shellfish. $14.99

Mirabeau Rosé Classic, Provence, France

Varietals: 60% Grenache, Syrah 30%, 10% CinsaultAlc.12.5%

In 2009, former wine importer Stephen Cronk, his wife, Jeany, and their three children left London and moved to Provence to pursue their dream of becoming winemakers. They were joined by master winemaker Angela Muir, and Mirabeau Rosé was born. Domaine Mirabeau falls within the newly created subregion within the Côtes de Provence AOC, Notre Dame des Anges. The terroir covers 3,900 hectares of vineyards interwoven within the landscape of umbrella pines, cork oak trees, and chestnut groves typical of the Plaine des Maures, an ecosystem rich in fauna and flora. The 20-hectare estate includes 14 hectares of vines (principally grenache, cinsault, and rolle). Domaine Mirabeau is in the process of converting to organic farming and regenerative agriculture. The Rosé Classic pours a pale peach color with brighter pink reflections. It is elegant on the nose, with aromas of cherry, vineyard peach, apricot, orange zest, freesia, and a hint of strawberries and cream. Ample and generous in the mouth, it has good acidity. Notes of dried peach and ripe strawberry, and a slight grip, gives some real layered depth to the palate.

Pairs well with charcuterie, ratatouille, grilled salmon. $17.99

Centolani Poggiotondo Brunello Di Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy

Varietal: Sangiovese GrossoAlc. 14%

The Brunello vineyards of Montalcino blanket the rolling hills surrounding the village and fan out at various elevations, creating the potential for Brunello wines expressing different styles. Brunello di Montalcino by law must be aged a minimum of four years, including two years in barrel before release. Società Agricola Centolani is located in the heart of Montalcino, Tuscany, between Val d’Arbia and Val d’Orcia. The Peluso Centolani family bought it in 1979 as a hunting preserve, when it consisted of only 10 hectares. In 1983, they produced their first vintage of Brunello di Montalcino. After years of large investments in planting new vines, building new facilities and renovating the estate, Società Agricola Centolani is now one of the largest and most famous wine estates in Montalcino, with its vineyards, olive groves, arable land, and woods covering approximately 200 hectares.

This Brunello has pretty plum and violet aromas with ash and rose stems. On the palate, intense flavors of black cherry and tobacco lead to a complex and lasting finish.

Pairs well with red meat, game, and mature cheeses.$49.99

Marcelo Bocardo Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina

Varietal: MalbecAlc. 14%

Marcelo Bocardo is a third-generation winemaker and descendant of an Italian immigrant family who was born and raised in Mendoza. Since his early childhood he followed his grandfather and father while they worked at the family’s winery and, at 12 years of age, his grandfather put him in charge of two of their vineyard’s rows. As a young man, Marcelo left Argentina and became head winemaker at a winery in Chile. In 2001, Marcelo returned to Argentina to open his own winery, Proemio Wines. In 2019, when Marcelo’s son began working at the winery, Marcelo launched a line of wines under the name Marcelo Bocardo. The Bocardo Malbec is certified organic and has a sappy, fresh and gently herbal nose with bright red-berry aromas, leading to a palate with succulent dark-berry and chocolate flavors. Pairs well with tomato-based pasta dishes, grilled meats, and roasted chicken. $15.99

I Veroni Quona Chianti Rufina Riserva,

Varietal: Sangiovese Alc. 15%

In the Middle Ages the vineyard and farmland of I Veroni formed part of the extensive feudal estates in the Arno valley of the Conti Guidi family. The present farm buildings are a blend of centuries-old structures and contemporary additions. The first stone wine fermentation tank was built in 1809. Parts of this are still visible in the original cellars. The estate passed from the Guidi family to the Modigliani di Rufina family in the early 19th century. At the beginning of the 20th century it was bought by Carlo Malesci, whose family still owns it today. The name I Veroni is derived from the wide terraces surrounding the farm where many years ago tobacco leaf and grain from the Arno valley was dried. Today I Veroni is a specialized, certified organic winery, located in the Chianti Rùfina area about 10 km from the city of Florence. The vineyards cover 15 hectares and 20 hectares are planted with olives. Three clones of Sangiovese planted in the late 1990s make up this superb family estate Riserva. Tile red in color, the nose is redolent of forest floor, earthy notes of leather and tobacco leaf, smoked meats, and dried black fruits. The palate is ripe and piquant, with berry fruit, sour cherry and plum notes, along with chocolatey tannins, savory spices like nutmeg and clove, cedar, and black pepper. It’s beautifully balanced, retaining a refinement and elegance despite its big structure.

Pairs well with cured meats, a prime rib roast, pasta with meaty tomato-based sauce. $27.99

And don’t forget to check out what’s new in our beer case. We have a malty Oktoberfest from the von Trapp brewery and the wonderfully dark but slightly hoppy Robust Porter from Smuttynose.

Savour Saturday Wine Tasting – 2 – 4 pm

THIS SATURDAY, Oct. 22, 2 – 4 pm

COMPLIMENTARY

FINE WINE TASTING @ SAVOUR WITH CHELSEA FROM VINEYARD ROAD WINES

Vineyard Road is an importer and distributor of fine wines from around the world, based in Framingham, Massachusetts. Since 2000, they have offered high-quality and high-value wines that reflect their soils of origin. Some of their estates have been around for only 5 years. Others have been making wine for more than 500. Vineyard Road specializes in small production and artisanal producers who work in concert with the land.

 WINES

Domaine Guilberteau Rosé 2021, Saumur, France

Varietal: Cabernet Franc Alc. 12%

This is the first vintage for this rosé from Romain Guiberteau. Guiberteau has become one of the great signatures of the Saumurois. He operates 14.5 hectares of vines grown organically, on clay-limestone soils in the Bizay and Brézé sectors, on deeper soils in the Montreuil-Bellay region. From the estate cuvée to the plot cuvées, the work is meticulous. This rosé has a lovely salmon pink color. The elegant nose has aromas of citrus fruits, fresh grapefruit, and white pepper. In the mouth a beautiful mineral tension gives way to a fleshy, dense juiciness..

Pairs well with niçoise salad, soft cheeses, salmon. $22.99

Elektrisch Riesling 2020, Rheinhessen, Germany

Varietal: Riesling Alc. 10%

The Rheinhessen region has gone from being derided as the land of Liebfraumilch to being the white-hot, super star of Germany. Florian Fauth, the winemaker of Elektrisch, happens to be the brother-in-law of Klaus Peter Keller, one of the pioneers who helped make the Rheinhessen one of the superstar regions of Germany. It is a delicate art to bring out the right amounts of sweetness and acidity in Riesling, and Fauth is able to do it, while crafting wines that are harmonious and vibrant. Mouthwatering acidity, citrusy aromatics, and flavors of granny smith apples will make you appreciate a wine that is sweet in the right way. This is an impressive wine that shows incredible value. This biodynamic, fruit-forward halbtrocken (off-dry) Riesling Kabinett from the Rheinhessen is juicy and thirst-quenching, showing tart citrus and wet stones, marked by lively acidity.

Pairs well with sushi, Asian food, and salty blue cheese, like Stilton. $17.99

Domaine Grégoire Hoppenot Fleurie Indigene 2020, Beaujolais, France

Varietal: Gamay Alc. 13.5%

Named “Discovery of the Year” in 2021’s Revue des Vins de France, Grégoire Hoppenot went to Fleurie following two years as director of the Chapoutier-owned Maison Trénel in Beaujolais. Grégoire has leased nine hectares, along with a small plot in Morgon. He describes his winemaking as “intuitive,” using indigenous yeasts and low sulphur, and practices organic farming in the vineyard. Fleurie Indigene is a blend of young vines from two parcels, Les Roches and Les Garants. It is the first of the Hoppenot wines to be organically certified. Ruby red in colour, Indigène displays elegant notes of raspberry, cherry, and dried rose. It is well-structured on the palate with bright red fruit flavors, lifted acidity, and polished tannins.

Pairs well with paté, brie and camembert, turkey (an excellent Thanksgiving wine). $25.99

Pra Morandina Valpolicella 2020, Veneto, Italy

Varietal: Corvina Alc. 12.5%

Graziano Pra followed his father and grandfather into the wine business, studying oenology, and taking over the family winery in Soave in the early 1980s. After searching for the right site, Graziano began the new millennium by fulfilling his long-held ambition and purchasing a 13-hectare vineyard near Mezzane in eastern Valpolicella. He farms the land organically, using no chemical treatments. During September and October, the grapes are harvested, de-stemmed and pressed, and left to macerate and ferment for 15 days in vertical vats. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in stainless steel followed by 3 to 6 months’ maturation in Allier oak casks. This is a vibrant, fragrant Valpolicella with intensity yet delicacy from the low yields of the Morandina vineyards. Bright red berry aromas with notes of wild thyme lead to a fresh, sappy wine with layers of raspberry leaf, licorice and cherry. It has a juicy, fresh yet silky mouthfeel and a balancing acidity that combine for a long finish.

Pairs well with grilled vegetables, seafood stew, risotto, roasted chicken. $24.99

Trediberri Langhe Nebbiolo 2021, Piedmont, Italy

Varietal: Nebbiolo Alc. 14%

Trediberri prides itself on its upstart status. In 2007, Nicola Oberto, along with his father, Federico (former cellar master for La Morra’s Renato Ratti), and their close friend Vladimiro Rambaldi, acquired 12.5 acres exclusively for the production of Barolo in the Piedmont town of Berri. The Trediberri, or “three of Berri,” was born. Langhe Nebbiolo is not only one of the greatest values in Piedmont, but often serves as a barometer for the seriousness and talents of a producer. Trediberri’s is one of the best available. The wine showcases the Nebbiolo grape with its classic aromas of forest berry, white licorice, and dusty earth. On the palate, there are complex layers of bright rose petals and red cherries. Firm structure and bright acidity make this a very food friendly wine.

Pairs well with charcuterie, a rich ragu, pizza. $22.99

And don’t forget to check out what’s new in our beer case. We have a malty Oktoberfest from the von Trapp brewery and the wonderfully dark but slightly hoppy Robust Porter from Smuttynose.

 WINES

Manicor Vineyards, Kaltern/Caldaro, South Tyrol, Italy

For his services to the Empire, the Austrian Emperor raised Hieronymus Manicor to the nobility and endowed him with land on the shores of Lake Kaltern in the early 17th century. The oldest buildings on the estate date to 1608. In 1662, a granddaughter of Hieronymus married into the family of the Counts Enzenberg; by the 17th century the Enzenberg family was already involved in winemaking. After generations in the Manicor family, in 1978 the Manicor estate finally passed to the Counts Enzenberg.

In 1991 Count Michael Goëss-Enzenberg took over Manincor from his uncle. At that time the estate supplied grapes to the wine-growers’ cooperatives in Caldaro and Terlano. Count Michael improved the quality of the vineyards through a policy of strictly limited yields and near-natural husbandry. In 1996 the first Manincor wines were produced in the estate’s own cellar. The vineyard, which is on the Alto Adige Wine Road, is run using sustainable and biodynamic processes and produced its first biodynamic vintage in 2006.

Reserva della Contessa 2021

Varietal: 51% Pinot Blanc, 31% Chardonnay, 18% Sauvignon Blanc,  Alc. 13.5%

Reserva della Contessa is biodynamic and is fermented in oak barrels with yeast naturally occurring in the vineyard. The wine is then matured on lees for nine months. It pours yellow with flashes of green. Delicate aromas of apple, apricot, and a hint of sage are found in the nose. It is elegant and mellow on the palate, and finishes with refreshing acidity. Serve this wine lightly chilled but not cold.

Pairs well with roasted salmon, chicken, or pork. $25.99

Der Keil 2021

Varietal: Old-vine Vernatsch Alc. 12.5%

Der Keil is made from grapes grown at 250 meters above sea level on south-facing slopes overlooking Lake Kaltern, one of the warmest sites in the South Tyrol; the old vines are trained onto pergolas and grown in sandy clay soil. The grapes are crushed and fermented in open wooden vats with skin contact for one week. It spends five months on lees in oak barrels. Bright ruby in the glass, der Keil has aromas of cherry and toasted almonds on the nose. It is juicy on the palate with an elegant finish. Serve slightly chilled (53° to 57° F).

Pairs well with dishes based on tomatoes and garlic, fried fish, chicken. $25.99

Reserva del Conte 2019

Varietal: 43% Merlot, 35% Lagrein, 22% Cabernet Alc. 13%

Each varietal that makes up the Reserva del Conte was crushed separately and fermented in a mixture of oak and cement vats and stainless-steel tanks for 10 days using yeast that occurs naturally in the vineyards. The wine is then transferred to oak barrels, where it ferments for 12 months. The wine has a bright ruby color and a nose full of berry fruit and spice. On the palate, flavors of dark chocolate, licorice, black and white pepper, and plums are given structure by silky tannins.

Pairs well with Mediterranean foods, grilled red meat, lamb. $27.99

Domaine Brusset, Rhone Valley, France

On this family estate established in 1947, the Brusset family combines traditional winemaking with new techniques introduced by each generation. Three wine-growers and winemakers with a variety of experiences, founder André Brusset (1910-1999), his son Daniel, and his grand-son Laurent, have all contributed to the distinctive character of Domaine Brusset. Domaine Brusset is located in the heart of the southern Côtes-du-Rhône valley vineyards, at Cairanne. Brusset’s 70 hectares of vineyards extend over the lands of five prestigious appellations: Gigondas, Cairanne, Rasteau, Côtes-du-Rhône, and Ventoux.

Les Travers 2020, Cairanne

Varietals: Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, Cinsault. Alc. 13.5%

Each grape variety that makes up Les Travers is vinified separately and fermented in vats for 20 days. The wine is mature for 10 months, 70 percent in vats and 30 percent in 3- or 4-year-old barrels. The wine pours a deep ruby color, and shows

aromas of blackcurrant and elderberry. On the palate, there are full, concentrated flavors of blackcurrant and cherry, silky tannins, and a touch of pepper and spice on the finish.

Pairs well with duck, game meats, aged cheeses. $21.99

Tradition Le Grand Montmirail 2020, Gigondas Varietals: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault Alc. 14%

Hand-picked and selected following strict ripeness checks, the grapes are fermented in vats for 21 days with no added yeast. The wine is brick red in color, and the nose is filled with very ripe dark plum, brambly fruits, and minerals. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has flavors of blue and black fruits and lovely rounded tannins. Pairs well with meaty stews, braised meat, lamb. $32.99

And don’t forget to check out what’s new in our beer case. We have a malty Oktoberfest from the von Trapp brewery and the wonderfully dark but slightly hoppy Robust Porter from Smuttynose.

FINE WINE TASTING @ SAVOUR WITH CASEY G. OF IDEAL WINES

Ideal is an importer and distributor of fine wine and spirits based in Medford, Massachusetts. The company’s roots go back to 1905, when Samuel Bender and two partners founded a retail wine and provisions store in Boston, which evolved in the years after WW II into one of the city’s premiere fine wine shops. It was in the late 1970s that Larry Bender, the third generation of his family in the business, decided to strike out on his own, separating the importing business from his father’s retail operation. His goal was to import small high-quality wineries directly to the Massachusetts market, wines that had previously only come through national importers, if they were imported at all. Most of the wines at that time were French, but the company soon expanded its Italian selections, and has since rounded out the book with some American wineries as well as wines from other countries. Ideal brings us wine with a strong sense of place, made with minimal intervention, at a great price.

WINES

Verget Mâcon-Pierreclos Chardonnay 2020, Maconnais, France

Varietal:Chardonnay Alc.13%

Often referred to as “the mad Belgian,” Jean-Marie Guffens is the legendary winemaker from the Mâconnais who receives much critical praise for producing “poor man’s white Burgundy,” worthy of the finest wines of the Côte d´Or.The adventure started in 1976 when Jean-Marie Guffens and his wife, Maine Heynen, arrived in Burgundy. After learning French, Jean-Marie undertook a viticultural course at the local Davayé school. In 1979, Jean-Marie and Maine purchased their first few plots of vines that no one wanted on the steep hills of Pierreclos, a small village west of Mâcon. In 1990 Jean-Marie Guffens started a very progressive micro-négociant business, Maison Verget. Verget buys its grapes from passionate winegrowers, selected for their seriousness and their work that respects the vines and the terroir. They have become, over time, valuable partners and Verget determines with them the management of the vines and their yield.

The wines of Maison Verget have a clear acidity, with a mineral character, coupled with ripe fruit. They unite tension, depth, texture, and amplitude. It is generally acknowledged that Jean-Marie Guffens shapes some of the greatest whites of Burgundy. Mâcon-Pierreclos is produced from young Chavignevines, and is fermented on the lees for six months in small stainless-steel casks, producing a seductive, indulgent wine with a certain richness and a pleasant minerality. The nose is elegant, with white fruit and exotic fruit aromas and slight spicy notes. The palate reveals great minerality, power and richness, with superb length.

Becker Riesling, Alsace, France

Varietal: RieslingAlc.12.5%

The history of Vins Becker traces back to 1610 when Jean Becker became the owner. Today, Jean-François manages the vineyards while his sister manages the commercial part of the winery. In total, the vineyard covers an area of 32 hectares. They grow Riesling, Pinot Gris, Muscat, Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Gewurztraminer. The team has been using organic farming techniques in the vineyard and the winery since 1999. The soil of Vins Becker vineyards have a unique geology of bedrock with a small amount of limestone. During the winemaking process, only the free run juice is used to produce the wines. They prefer the use of natural yeasts and limit the filtration to the minimum. The wines are crisp and dry, with a nice body and revealing the characteristics of the terroir. Vins Becker’s Riesling has a fresh minerality and aromas of apricot, pineapple, and spices.

Pairs well with fish, shellfish, seafood, white meats, and sauerkraut. $17.99

Domaine Nudant Ladoix Rouge, Burgundy, France

Varietal: Pinot Noir Alc. 13.5%

The Nudant winery can look back on more than 200 years of history and has been managed by the Nudant family for many generations. Guillaume Nudant is now the fourth generation to follow his family’s tradition of producing award-winning wines in the rolling countryside of Ladoix-Serrigny and Corton. From the beginning, very strict rules were applied in the selection of the grapes. This method is still used today. The winery covers an area of 16 hectares in the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits. It houses 20 appellations. This includes wines such as Village, 1er Cru, and Grand Cru. The approximately 40-year-old Pinot Noir vines for Ladoix Rouge grow at an altitude of 310meters with a southeast orientation. About 10,000 bottles per year are produced from a total of only 2.3 hectares of vineyards on clay limestone soil. In the glass the wine shows a deep red color. The nose shows intense and varied aromas of red fruits and spices. On the palate, there are notes of dark strawberries, cherry compote and pickled morello cherries as well as hints of spices, elderberry, and mocha. Soft tannins are part of a long finish.

WINES

Famille Perrin Reserve Côtes du Rhône Blanc, France

Varietals: Grenache blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne, ViognierAlc.11.5%

Famille Perrin is a leading organic wine producer in the southern Rhone Valley, where they have been making wine for five generations. They are committed to manual methods and to the belief that organic viticulture is the only way to express the true essence of the terroir. This Côtes du Rhône Blanc pours a pale yellow with hints of delicate green. It has strong floral and mineral aromas on the nose leading to lemon, bergamot, and hawthorn on the palate and ending with a long finish.

Pairs well with Mediterranean food, grilled fish, bouillabaisse. $14.99

Hedges CMS Chardonnay, Yakima Valley, Washington

Varietal: ChardonnayAlc.12%

In 1989, Tom and Anne-Marie Hedges bought 50 acres on Red Mountain in the Yakima Valley and planted 40 acres of Bordeaux grape varieties, and over the years, wine production has become a family affair: their daughter, Sarah Hedges-Goedhart, is the head winemaker and their son, Christopher Hedges, is the general manager. In 2008 they converted to biodynamic farming, and in 2015 they released the first biodynamic Cabernet Sauvignon in Washington. The CMS Chardonnay pours a light golden color. On the nose, there is a hint of blood orange and tart caramel apple, mixed with cinnamon and buttered toast. There is a fresh mineral component to this wine. A tart beginning leads into a full and creamy mid-palate. There is a bit of butter, some fresh citrus and apple flavors, and a touch of spice on the finish with just a hint of that blood orange.

Pairs well with shellfish, lobster, and risotto. $14.99

Colene Clemens Dopp Creek Pinot Noir 2020, Newberg, Oregon

Varietals: Pinot NoirAlc.14%

Colene Clemens was founded in 2005 by Joe and Victoria Stark

with the purpose of making exceptional pinot noir, and they

named the property in honor of Victoria’s mother. Wine production began in 2008. Spanning 122 acres where the Chehalem Mountains converge with Ribbon Ridge, the estate contains both sedimentary soils

and volcanic soils. Elevation climbs from 350 to 650 feet, where the winery perches with sweeping views of the coast range and valley; 62 acres are planted to pinot noir and chardonnay. The vineyard is

completely dry farmed, and sustainable and organic processes are used whenever possible. The 2020 Dopp Creek opens with delicate aromas of rich purple fruit and thyme flowers. This approachable pinot noir has a juicy and round palate brimming with sweet cranberry and cherry, intermingled with wisps of cardamom and savory herbs. It is well balanced and a delight to sip. This wine is best consumed within the next three to four years.

Pairs well with salmon, roast chicken, pasta dishes $32.99

San Polo 2016 Brunello di Montalcino, Italy

Varietal: Sangiovese Alc. 14%

Brunello is a red wine of great power and elegance, the ultimate expression of Sangiovese. In Montalcino it is characterized by its reddish-brown color and intense aromas and flavors. San Polo, the Allegrini estate in Montalcino, makes their Brunello guided by respect for the land and sustainability. This Brunello pours an intense ruby red color with garnet reflections. The nose expresses the typical aromas of violet and small red fruits. There are hints of underbrush, aromatic wood, vanilla, and jam, followed by subtle notes of intense and persistent coffee. It is a warm wine in the mouth, with a dense and full-bodied texture. The finish is long, with well-defined tannins. Brunello di San Polo withstands long aging and improves with time in the bottle with earthy, savory aromas emerging, along with flavors of black currant and raspberry and notes of earth, iron and juniper. Best from 2025 through 2045.

Pairs well with rich risottos, roast lamb, steak with mushroom sauce. $64.99

Château Les Trois Croix 2016 Bordeaux, Fronsac, France

Varietals: Merlot, Cabernet Franc Alc.14.5%

Chateau Les Trois Croix dates back to at least 1712 when the large stone tower was carved and inscribed Trois Croix, which is translated to three crosses. However, we started paying attention to the property after Patrick Leon purchased the vineyard in 1995. Prior to taking over Les Trois Croix in 1995, Patrick Leon was the winemaker for Chateau Mouton Rothschild in Pauillac. Sadly, Patrick Leon passed away in 2018. Today, the property is managed by his son, Bertrand Leon. The 20-hectare Right Bank vineyard of Chateau Les Trois Croix is planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. The terroir is limestone and clay soils. The vineyard is well placed at the peak of the Fronsac appellation with an elevation of 87 meters at its high point. This wine pours

a deep brilliant red color. The fruity nose has hints of black currant and blackberry. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with bright, precise black fruit and savory layers, framed by grainy tannins and finishing with a refreshing lift.

Pairs well with barbecued chicken, pork, duck, $34.99

Famille Brunier Le Pigeoulet 2019, Rhône France

Varietals: 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 5% Carignan, 5% Cinsault Alc. 14%

Brothers Frédéric and Daniel are the fourth generation of their family to farm the land of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. They have worked hard to solidify the legacy left by their father, Henri, and their great-grandfather, Hippolyte. Their Pigeoulet is exuberant and approachable. At table, it is versatile and generous, with abundant aromas of blackberries, herbs, and licorice that can complement a wide range of foods. The structure is sturdy with density and freshness, herbs, licorice and blackberries. Oak tannins show through, since 50% of the wine is aged in oak foudres for 18 months.

Pairs well with braised beef, pork, and cassoulet. $21.99

While you’re in the store, take a look at some of the new beers we have: Maine Beer’s flagship IPA, Lunch; another Maine Beer favorite, Peeper, a smooth pale ale with hints of citrus and some malt sweetness; and one of the best Belgian-style white beers this side of Belgium, Allagash White — made with coriander and curaçao orange peel, it’s lovely on a hot summer day.

WINES

La Calcinara Clochard, Marche,Italy

Varietal: 90%Verdicchio, 10% ChardonnayAlc.13%

Located in the rolling hills of Ancona in the Marche, on the eastern coast of Italy, La Calcinara is headed up by the Berluti siblings, Paolo and Eleonora. Their energy, enthusiasm, and love of wine is infectious. Their 12 hectares of vines and olive groves are farmed organically, and they make their wine with minimal intervention, using only very low additions of SO2 at bottling. This wine is named “Clochard,” which means vagrant in French, because it is made with Verdicchio vines that lie outside the Verdicchio Castelli DOC boundary. On the nose, Clochard has notes of lime zest, spring hawthorn and apple blossom, with a touch of cardamom. The palate is zippy, with flavors of lime juice, a gentle bitter and creamy almond note, and briny freshness, finishing with a long, yellow-pepper accented tang.

Pairs well with anchovies, shellfish, and fish dishes. $21.99

Troupis Holy Mania, Mantineia, Greece

Varietal: Moscofilero Alc.13.5%

The Troupis family has a long history of work in agronomy dating back to the ’70s where vines, fruit bearing trees and flowers have been grown and sold from their nursery in Mantineia. Over time, their efforts in the cultivation of vines grew into the desire to share their passion with others. Troupis Winery is located in the heart of Mantineia in the Peloponnese at an altitude of 700 meters in the region of Fteri. Tasos Troupis, supported by his children, has created a small-capacity production and wine-making family business; they produce and bottle wine exclusively from their estate vineyards, which total approximately 16 acres.

On the nose, Troupis’ crisp Moscofilero displays the slight perfumes of the surrounding Arcadian underbrush and bramble, along with jasmine and rose. On the palate, citrus fruit combines with violets, spices and the intense acidity with which Moscofilero has become synonymous. The wine has a long, complex mineral finish.

Pairs well with cucumber salads, chicken dishes, Greek fish soup. $21.99

Rings Pfalz Riesling 2020, Germany

The brothers Andreas and Steffen took over responsibility for the winery from their parents in 2008. In 2015, the winery was included in the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wineries) and was awarded 4 grapes in the Gault-Millau Wine Guide in 2017.The Riesling pours crystal clear, with aromas of grapefruit, apple, and peach. On the palate, it is full, with hints of citrus, apple and peach, ripe acidity, and minerality on the dry finish.

Pairs well with sushi, spicy foods, salmon.$21.99

Castello di Potentino Sacromontino 2021, Tuscany, Italy

Varietal: Sangiovese Alc. 14%

Run by the Greene family, who are British transplants to Italy, as an old-fashioned Residenzad’Epoca, the Castello di Potentino warmly welcomes visitors all year round. The Castle is also a fully functioning farm. They make their own award-winning wines and olive oil and love to forage for local ingredients in the fields around the castle. Their Sacromontino is medium garnet in color, and shows aromas of red cherries, tomato leaf, espresso, and oregano on the nose. The palate is medium bodied with flavors of cherry, blueberry, and black tea spices. The wine has fine-grained tannins and marked acidity, and the finish is dry and earthy.

Pairs well with pizza, pasta, and Italian beef stew. This is is a great buy – a full liter for only $19.99!

Bounded roughly by the cities of Portland in the north and Eugene in the south, the near-idyllic wine growing region is cradled between the Cascade Mountain Range on its east side and the Coastal Range to the west. It produces some of America’s most sublime expressions of Pinot Noir. From the northern slopes of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, Nevermore is a dark, elegant Pinot Noir. Vibrant aromas of cherries, raspberries, and smoky vanilla on the nose are followed by blackberry, spice and a silky mouthfeel on the palate.

Estelle et Rodolphe Cognard Saint-Nicolas de Bourgeuil Cuvée Les Malgagnes, France

Varietal: Cabernet Franc Alc. 12%

Domaine Estelle et Rodolphe Cognardhas been a family-owned estate since 1974, and now the estate spans 15 hectares of vines in St Nicolas de Bourgueil and Bourgueil. The vineyards are devoted in entirety to Cabernet Franc, with the rows of vines interspersed with grass to keep down the weeds and to force the vines to root deeper for nourishment. Since the 1980s, the estate had practiced lutte raisonnée, or reasoned agriculture, but in 2017 they made the decision to convert to organic agriculture, and 2018 was their first organic vintage. In 2020, their domain was officially certified organic. Les Malgagnes pours a dark brick color. The mouthfeel is fleshy, with flavors of strawberry, blackcurrant, spice, and vanilla on the palate and a long, elegant finish.

Kientzler Gewürztraminer, Alsace, France

Varietal: Gewürztraminer Alc.13.5%

The Kientzler family has been growing vines for more than five  generations in Ribeauvillé and the surrounding area. As early as 1866, Dominique Alphonse Kientzler had inherited vines from his father and grandfather and in 1895 was involved in the creation of France’s first winemaking cooperative in Ribeauvillé, in addition to running the local grocery shop. His son Alphonse carried on the grocery business while also tending to the vines; he eventually became the Mayor of Ribeauvillé. It was Alphonse’s son François though, who was the first to fully concentrate on wine production, taking himself off to Switzerland to study viticulture. By the 1970s, he was joined by his son André in the wine business and the pair undertook a massive replanting program to replace much of the old Chasselas with the noble Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Gewürztraminer varieties. Today, the Kientzlers farm almost 14 hectares of vines in Ribeauvillé, Bergheim, Hunawihr, and Riquewihr, including significant parcels in the Grand Crus of Geisberg, Osterberg, and Kirchberg. They are working toward making the winery completely organic by 2023. This Gewürztraminer is fresh and delicately perfumed with restraint and lovely fine acidity buffering its richness. Intense and exotic aromas of lychee, tropical fruit, and pepper on the nose are followed by a delicate fruity sweetness in the mouth. The spicy profile and fine acidity make for a long, elegant finish.

Pairs well with coconut curry, mango salad, asparagus, or lamb with dried-fruit cous-cous, as well as all Thai food and sheep’s milk cheeses. $24.99

FINE WINE TASTING @ SAVOUR WITH OWNER, KATHLEEN MORGAN – BIODYNAMIC WINES

Biodynamic vs. Organic

Biodynamic farming was first developed in the 1920s by Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian spiritual philosopher. Simply put, biodynamics is organic wine taken a step further. Just as organic farming takes into account the life around it by growing without the use of toxic chemical pesticides or herbicides, biodynamic farming then encourages and cultivates a symbiotic biosphere wherein all species depend on and nurture one another. These species include anything from soil types to other plants insects, animals and native yeasts. They then plant, harvest, and prune based on a precise calendar that takes into account lunar cycles and the position of the sun and planets. In terms of taste, biodynamic wines are very similar to organic wines, as they are produced similarly. However, compared to conventionally produced wine, organically grown wine has been proven to taste much better. This is likely due to the heightened terroir that comes with organically produced wine. Because organic and biodynamic wines are made in harmony with their surroundings, these “natural” flavors flourish in these wines more than they do in conventionally produced wines.

BIODYNAMIC WINES

Patrice Colin makes wonderful wine from his family’s well-established domain in one of France’s newest appellations, the Coteaux de Vendômoise. While the appellation is technically new, viticulture here is ancient. Colin farms several old parcels of ancestral varietals, including Pineaud’Aunis, an ancient red grape from which chenin blanc developed. He makes Perles Grises from Pineaud’Aunis using the traditional method champenois, a very labor-intensive process requiring secondary fermentation in the bottle. Inexpensive and refreshing, and a bargain at $18.99, it is a unique sparkling wine. With a bright and fresh concentration of vibrant red fruits and slight pepper on the palate, this is the ideal aperitif wine.

Pairs well with oysters, snacks, like popcorn, and all fried foods. $18.99

Domaine Jean TeillerMenetou-Salon Blanc2018, France

Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc Alc.13%

Domaine Jean Tellier is a family-owned winery that was founded in the 1950s. The domaine covers an area of 18 hectares and is located on the best slopes of the communes of Menetou-Salon, Parassy, Aubinges, and Vignoux sous les Aix; 11 hectares are planted with Sauvignon Blanc and 7 with Pinot Noir. Teiller has been certified organic since 2017, and has not used any pesticides, chemical fertilizers or weed killers since 2010. All grapes are harvested by hand and then fermented using mostly indigenous yeasts and in mainly stainless steel. This white wine comes from vines grown on shallow clay and limestone soils within the communes of Menetou-Salon, Parassy, and Aubinges. Notes of citrus fruit, along with some peach, flowers, and savory herbs on the nose lead to a good balance on the palate in which the fruit is uplifted by the acidity and a long finish. (This is my favorite Sauvignon Blanc in the store)!

An excellent aperitif.  Pairs well with shellfish, fish, chicken, cold salads, or goat cheese. $25.99

Les Equilibristes Hirsute 2020, Bergerac, France

Varietal: 70% Semillon, 20% Sauvignon Blanc, 10% Chenin Blanc Alc.13.5%

Les Equilibristes is a collective of winegrowers who work together to create new blends of grape, focused on neglected varietals. It is a collaborative process, from choosing the site to final bottling. Their ground rules are to use grapes from great terroir, practice organic methods, with minimal intervention in the cellar, and minimal use of sulfur. Hirsute is organic and biodynamic. It is golden in color and has hints of citrus and herbs on the nose. On the palate notes of orange and melon mingle with a zesty minerality.

Pairs well with risotto, octopus, and other seafood. $18.99

Maysara Arsheen Pinot Gris 2019, McMinnville, Oregon

Varietal: Pinot GrisAlc.12%

The owners of the Montazi vineyard and Maysara Winery are committed to capturing the true expression of the land and conveying it through their wine. They practice low-impact, holistic farming methods in their certified biodynamic vineyard and carry this philosophy into the cellar, where their biodynamic winemaking practices produce elegant wines that maintain the harmony between fruit and earth. A tantalizing perfume of lemon meringue, honey dew, and lavender enters the nose before you take the first sip of the Arsheen Pinot Gris. On the palate, flavors of apple, honeysuckle, and a hint of marzipan are followed by a crisp, clean finish.

Pairs well with salads, pasta dishes with fresh herbs, and fish. $22.99

Maysara Jamsheed Pinot Noir 2014, McMinnville, Oregon, Varietal: Pinot Noir Alc.13.5%

The owners of the Montazi vineyard and Maysara wines believe in holding vintages until the wine is fully evolved, rather than releasing chronologically. They believe each vintage is unique and should mature on its own timeline. The 2014 Pinot Noir was fermented with 100 percent native yeast and underwent malolactic fermentation. It was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels (10% new, 90% neutral). Violet and cherry aromas on the nose lead to raspberry, blackberry, black tea, and fresh cracked pepper on the palate and lengthy tannins on the finish. Delicious!

Pairs well with dark fowl, grilled meats or salmon, and caramelized vegetables. $34.99

Montepeloso A Quo, 2020, Tuscany, Italy

Varietals: 30% Montepulciano, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese, 10% Marselan, 14.5% Alicante Bouschet Alc. 12%

The Montepeloso estate is nestled in the hills of Suvereto near Bolgheri above the famed Tua Rita site on the Tuscan Coast – one of the hottest areas in Tuscany. The hot climate often produces over-concentrated wines, presenting a challenge to winemakers. Estate owner and winemaker Swiss-born Fabio Chiarelotto tackled this by overhauling his vineyards in 1997 – retraining, pruning, and regrafting many vines. He now grows all of his grapes biodynamically. Today, Montepeloso has few rivals on the Tuscan coast producing wines of elegance, refinement, and complexity. In the cellar, he does fairly short macerations, employs natural yeasts during fermentation, and never filters his wine. The blend of grapes makes for a complex yet balanced wine. The nose is dominated by dark red fruits and herbal notes, intermixed with spicy aromas and mineral notes. On the palate hints of black fruits and aromatic woods combine with a fine minerality.

Pairs well with paté, grilled beef or pork, or a hearty stew. $24.99

While you’re in the store, take a look at some of the new beers we have: Maine Beer’s flagship IPA, Lunch, another Maine Beer favorite, Peeper, a smooth pale ale with hints of citrus and some malt sweetness; and one of the best Belgian-style white beers this side of Belgium, Allagash White — made with coriander and curaçao orange peel, it’s lovely on a hot summer day.
