Charles River Wine Company brought a forty-foot container full of largely pre-sold French wines to Massachusetts on September 10, 2004, and delivered its first orders four days later.
“Over the years we have developed a well-balanced portfolio of fine wines. It is global in reach with American wines well represented. We hold to our original intentions, continuing to grow a manageable company that competes successfully with the state’s larger competitors. We have focused on fine wines and used our group’s buying and selling skills to become an important resource to the best restaurant and store buyers of Massachusetts.” (Peter Sagansky – owner)
Arik Colbath has been with Charles River Wines for many years and has decades of experience in the industry. He has a passion for the boutique, small-production wines in the Charles River portfolio and will share with us some of his favorites.
Aniello Soil Blanco De Pinot Noir, Patagonia, Argentina
Varietal: (White) Pinot Noir, Alc. 13.5%
Argentina’s cool climate Patagonia region is a combination of jagged mountains, plateaus, snow, rivers, plains and sea. The eastern bank of the upper Río Negro region is carpeted by sandy, loamy soils. The constant breezes and low relative humidity help keep the Aniello vineyards pest-free. The resulting wines are considered more elegant and refined than many of the more common, warm-weather wines from the Mendoza area. Aniello produces this white wine, Blanco de Pinot Noir, by gently pressing the fruit with minimal skin contact. The wine is then fermented in concrete tanks with indigenous and inoculated yeasts. 10% of the wine is aged up to five months in French oak. Stone fruit and floral aromas on the nose are followed by a rich, yet crisp, mouthfeel. Pairs well with risotto, grilled tuna, souffles. $19.99.
Boutinot Tiger Horse Old Vine Cinsault, Western Cape, South Africa
Varietal: Cinsault, Alc. 14%
Cinsault has been overlooked for so long in the Cape, but it is a grape variety Boutinot has been championing for years. The vines are mostly 65-year-old bush vines from hidden corners of the Cape. No irrigation is used on the vineyards and very little crop control is needed due to the age of the vines naturally restricted yield. The climate is perfect for viticulture with the low rainfall in summer months, tempered by cool afternoon breezes and the cold winters allowing the vines to rest and to build up reserves. All grapes are picked by hand at optimal phenolic ripeness, followed by a fermentation using delestage, which brings a lower concentration of tannins and a higher concentration of esters, key compounds that contribute fruitiness. The result is a wine that is full of juiciness. Bright, expressive and gently savory on the nose, with a vibrant ruby color. On the palate there is fresh pomegranate flavor and acidity, savory gamey notes, and a bright, cherry fruit. Pairs well with Asian duck dishes, carpaccio of tuna, beef or game. $14.99
Foxglove 2017 Pinot Noir, Central Coast, California
Varietal: Pinot Noir, Alc. 13.7%
Bob and Jim Varner are best known for the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir they produce under the Varner label, but with Foxglove they have produced one of the great value labels made in California. The Foxglove wines are selected from several sites located in the Central Coast. The warm climate and ocean add a burst of fruit with freshness. The use of oak is minimal yet adds some spice. Ripe red cherry and raspberry fruit leads the way, backed by juicy acidity, hints of autumn leaves and sweet smoky spice. The 2017 Foxglove Pinot Noir Central Coast is made from pinot noir clones pommard and 777 sourced from a hillside vineyard in Santa Barbara County, 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean at 600 feet elevation that has sandy, loamy soil. Medium-bodied, it has aromas of brambly black cherries that dominate on the palate. These cherry characters are flanked by subtle notes of cola, baking spice, tobacco, and herbs. Tannins are soft and the finish is long. Pairs well with pork, roast turkey, mushroom dishes. $22.99
Chateau Sainte Eulalie Plaisir d’Eulalie, Languedoc, France
Varietal: Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Alc. 14.5%
Chateau Sainte Eulalie is located in the Minervois region of France’s Languedoc, midway between Narbonne and the Medieval town of Carcassonne. The snowy peaks of the Pyrenees can be seen on the horizon and Narbonne and the Mediterranean lie 45 minutes to the south. The estate is comprised of 34 hectares on terraces 200 meters above the town of La Liviniere. Long regarded as the finest section of Minervois, La Liviniere has now been recognized as an official “Cru de Languedoc” and is entitled to its own appellation. The stony soil of clay and limestone is planted with Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, and Cinsault, with an average age of 25 years. The domaine also includes some century-old Carignan vines and 70 year-old Grenache. Viticulture is organic and is Certified Sustainable. Brilliant deep purple-ruby in color, the Plaisir has a nose of bright red and black fruits, and a hint of licorice. The palate is dense with silky smooth tannins. Full, round, and smooth, it is a very easy drinking wine. Elegant finish with lasting fruit and slightly spicy note. Pairs well with cassoulet, lamb, roast venison. $18.99
Peñalolén Cabernet Sauvignon 2018, Maipo Valley, Chile
Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon, Alc. 14.5%
The Maipo Valley is Chile’s most famous wine region. Set in the country’s Central Valley, it is warm and quite dry. Alluvial soils predominate but are supplemented with loam and clay. The climate in Maipo is best suited for ripe, full-bodied reds like Cabernet Sauvignon (the region’s most widely planted grape). The 2018 Peñalolén Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a very strong vintage and is a great value at this price. Full-bodied, and offering mouth-coating assorted dark fruit, its plush mouthfeel and supple tannins makes this a sensory experience, with some spicy earth tones adding complexity and intrigue. Pairs well with grilled steak, burgers, portabella mushrooms, and hard cheeses like gouda or cheddar. $ 24.99

FINE WINE TASTING with Mike Guinard of Village Wine Imports
WINES
Maison Olivier Tricon 2020 Chablis, Chablis, France
Varietal: Chardonnay, Alc.12.5%
Raised in a farming and wine growing area, Olivier Tricon has worked in various French regions, then as a cellar master on the family estate. In tandem, he worked as a broker, which led to him setting up his own wine merchant’s business. In 1998, Olivier purchased this estate — and thanks to excellent vineyards and knowledge, these wines will offer some of the best values in Chablis. This Chablis is made from 100% Chardonnay, from 20-year-old vines, sustainably grown on Kimmerigean limestone and vinified entirely in stainless steel. The result is a pleasantly austere amalgamation of green apple, under-ripe pear and a firm mineral backbone punctuated by crushed seashell and steel. Brilliant pale yellow with green tints. Lovely nose combining citrus fruits, acacia, and mineral notes. Ample attack flowing into a well-structured, ripe, rounded and concentrated palate where well-integrated freshness adds depth. Pairs well with seafood platters, tempura, and goat cheese. $34.99
Le Meurger 2022 Chardonnay, Macon, France
Varietal: Chardonnay, Alc. 13%
The Le Meurger name stems from the word “meurs” (walls), constructed to mark out a property, or built along the edges of plots from stones extracted from the fields. The walls were called “murgers” or “les meurgers.” The wines are great examples of the terroir behind the walls in this Burgundian vineyard. The Chardonnay grapes for Le Meurger wines are grown on the hillsides of Macon, around the Vire-Clesse area. The soils here have a higher amount of limestone than most of the region, giving the grapes a more elegant style, and lending the wine a slightly more mineral edge on the finish. Light citrus aromas of lemon and pear are enveloped with acacia honey. Citrus follows onto the palate, where lemon and lime give way to a floral honeyed finish. Pairs well with shellfish, crab cakes, chicken. $22.99
La Pietra del Focolare Augusto Colli di Luni,
Varietal: Vermentino, Alc.13%
La Pietra del Focolare is located right in the heart of that territory that gave birth to the small and prestigious DOC dei Colli di Luni. The company, founded in 1995, is located on the plateau between the hills of Castelnuovo Magra and Lunion, the winding southeastern side of the Liguria region. This small business project was born from the great passion for nature and viticulture of Stefano Salvetti and Laura Angelini. Augusto is a Vermentino that epitomizes the Colli di Luni tradition. It comes from the lowest vineyards of the D.O.C. with clayey and fresh soils, which surround the historic Villa of Colonel Archime de Casani, within an enclave, sheltered from the cold north winds and pleasantly tempered by the sea breeze. The wine is characterized by a straw yellow color with faint greenish reflections. On the nose there are notes of wild white flowers and of aromatic herbs, together with hints of pear and apple. On the palate it is fine and easy to drink but compelling, with good body. Pairs well with seafood, pasta with pesto, and ratatouille. $29.99
Vrac, or “envrac” translates to “bring your own bottle.” In many French villages, locals will bring bottles or jugs to a nearby winery and fill them up with an easy-drinking wine to use as their house wine. Vrac Cotes du Rhone is made from fruit grown in the southern Rhone valley; 90% of the fruit is de-stemmed, with the remaining 10% left as whole clusters. Fermentation occurs in open concrete and stainless-steel vats. After pressing, the wine is aged in steel tanks. In the old-school approach, a Cotes du Rhone red wine would almost always have seen some barrel ageing — the same barrels sometimes used for too many vintages — leaving the opportunity for brettanomyces or other bacterial life to flourish and become part of the aromatic profile, often described as barnyard. But in the new school of winemaking, every attempt is made to capture the freshness of fruit while leaving room for the stony minerality to show through, so no oak is used at all. The result is a delicious, fresh wine that delivers a true sense of place. Pairs well with lamb, venison, pork. $16.99
Celler Comunicais located in the town of Falset, 370 meters above sea level in a dry, Mediterranean climate. Vineyard age ranges from 25 – 85 years. Patri Morillo and Pep Aguilar were not born into the world of wine. They did find it though, and 10 years after working in other people’s vineyards, Pep and Patri now have their own estate project. For years, the wine style in Montsant has been chasing that of Priorat, but Pep and Patri have their own style. Leaving the wine unoaked, they offer the 3 most important details in a wine: soil, fruit, and vintage. Their Montsant is more akin to the Cru Beaujolais and Northern Rhone. The wine is a snap-shot of the estate. It depicts the estate’s soils of decomposed granite and climatic conditions which are slightly less severe than those of the rest of the area. Suc de Sauló translates from Catalan to mean “juice of granite.”Fresh blackberry, blackcurrant and raspberry flavors offset by an intense mineral line and incredibly smooth fruit tannins. There’s a touch of thyme and bay to the palate, but this is anything but rustic. Comunica Garnacha Carinyena is the estate wine of Mas d’en Cosme, made from roughly equal portions of Garnacha and Carinyena, and a touch of Syrah (10%). It’s fermented with indigenous yeast and lots of whole bunches, and raised entirely without oak to preserve the bright fruit and incredible texture inherent in the wine. Comunica shows fresh blackberry, blackcurrant and raspberry flavors offset by an intense mineral line and incredibly smooth fruit tannins and a hint of thyme and bay to the palate. Pairs well with beef brisket, roasted pork, smoked turkey. $24.99

FINE WINE TASTING with Paige Farrell of Hogshead Wines
A hogshead is a large cask of wine. References to “hogsheads” were commonly found in colonial America as a standard measure of taxation for wine and other beverages. It now refers to a specified volume equaling 63 U.S. gallons. Hogshead Wine Company is a well-connected, fresh distributor composed of industry veterans which serves the best restaurants and the finest wine shops throughout Massachusetts. They appreciate tradition in the vineyard and seek to represent growers and importers who embrace this same philosophy – the encouragement of time-honored techniques and minimal intervention.
The owners of the Montazi vineyard and Maysara Winery are committed to capturing the true expression of the land and conveying it through their wine. They practice low-impact, holistic farming methods in their certified biodynamic vineyard and carry this philosophy into the cellar, where their biodynamic winemaking practices produce elegant wines that maintain the harmony between fruit and earth. Their sparkling rose made with 100% Pinot Noir grapes is balanced, with high tension acidity and minerality. The fine bubbles keep the aromatics tight with a clean finish of dried cranberries, pomegranate and wild strawberries.Serve as an aperitif. Pairs well with lobster, schnitzel, chocolate. $37.99
Trizanne Signature Wines Sauvignon Blanc, Cape South Coast, South Africa
Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc, Alc. 13%
It may be working harvests in Alsace, Bordeaux, the Rhône, and the Douro that caused Trizanne Barnard to choose specific sites based on which grapes would be most suitable for the soil and climate. She is always looking for freshness, uniqueness and contrast, which she has found for Sauvignon Blanc in the cooler temperature vineyards of Elim, at the southernmost tip of Africa, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. Trizanne has made this wine since 2013, showcasing a fresh, tank fermented style. This Sauvignon Blanc has vibrant notes of passion fruit, pear, sweet melon and citrus. There is a distinct mineral presence from this cooler climate. A beautiful salinity runs through the wine. Pairs well with oysters, fresh crab, simply grilled fish. $19.99
Storm Point Chenin Blanc, Swartland, South Africa
Varietals:Chenin Blanc, Alc.12.5%
Winemaker Mick Craven explored vineyards of the Western Cape of South Africa searching for sites speaking to the soul of this incredible place. Made from grapes from multiple vineyards in Swartland, a weathered landscape known as the Cape of Storms. This project was started as a collaboration focused on giving consumers a great insight into what the Swartland can do with varieties that work so well in the climate and soils. This Chenin Blanc has stone fruit and citrus notes, with a splash of salinity. The palate is bright, with herbal undertones, and typifies the region and grape. Its finish is mineral driven. Pairs well with grilled shrimp, pork chops, turkey.$19.99
The owners of the Montazi vineyard and Maysara wines believe in holding vintages until the wine is fully evolved, rather than releasing chronologically. They believe each vintage is unique and should mature on its own timeline. The 2015 Pinot Noir was fermented with 100 percent native yeast and underwent malolactic fermentation. It was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels (10% new, 90% neutral). Violet and cherry aromas on the nose lead to raspberry, blackberry, black tea, and fresh cracked pepper on the palate and lengthy tannins on the finish. Pairs well with dark fowl, grilled meats or salmon, and caramelized vegetables. $39.99
The unruly landscape and intense growing season of the Swartland is the bedrock for this wine. The grapes for the wine come from three vineyards in the area: Paardeberg (Cinsault 50%, and Syrah), Malmesbury (Cinsault 50%), and Riebeek Valley (Carignan). The wine was fermented in stainless steel and aged for 9 months in neutral barriques (60%) and stainless steel (40%). Raspberry, black cherry, and crushed Herbes de Provence make up the bouquet on this wine. The palate is vibrant, with fresh, flavors of plum and orange zest. Smooth tannins lead to a refined finish. Pairs well with gilled mushrooms, charcuterie, grilled meat. $19.99

WINES
Westport River Winery, Westport, Massachusetts
We’re pouring three wines from Westport River Winery, which is on the southeast coast of Massachusetts and is owned and operated by the Russell Family. They have been producing wine since 1986. On 80 acres of farmland near the Westport River, Westport River produces approximately 10,000 cases of wine a year, including their signature traditional method sparkling wines, whites, reds, and vermouth.
This Mayflower Rosé has a powerful aromatic nose of orange
marmalade, toast, strawberry jam, and bread dough. It is rich and toasty, with bright notes of cherry, strawberry, tangy mandarin orange and yellow peach. With its clean and lingering flavors, it is reminiscent of classic aged Champagne, finishing with a touch of nutty sherry and caramel. Powerful, mouth-filling fruit flavors are nevertheless crisp and balanced. Pairs well with richer foods such as garlic sausages and charcuterie. $36.99
Mayflower Pinot Gris
Varietal: Pinot Gris Alc. 12.6%
Aromas of white peach, ripe yellow apple, and sweet anise hint at the complexity of this wine. Smooth, balanced, and rich, this Pinot Gris takes advantage of grapes grown on Long Island to produce a classic example of this popular grape variety. Ripe, unoaked, textured, and silky on the finish. Pairs well with quiche, shellfish, spicy Indian and Asian cuisine. $27.99
Silk & Spice is a tribute to the spirit of adventure shown by the
Portuguese navigators who explored the globe in the 15th century and discovered the commercial silk and spice routes. Silk Route celebrates its namesake and is a smooth, ruby-colored red wine with aromas of red fruit, white chocolate, and vanilla. It has a finish that is both silky and smooth. Pairs well with cured meats, lamb, pork. $14.99
Evesham Wood Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon
Varietal: Pinot Noir Alc. 13%
Nestled on a lower terrace of the Eola-Amity Hills’ eastern slope in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, this 13 acre-estate vineyard was planted in 1986. The soils are primarily basalt-derived volcanic and very well-drained, thus yielding pinot noir with great structure and at the same time aromatic and with finesse. Evesham Wood obtained organic certification in 2000. In addition, the winery is a charter member of the Deep Roots Coalition, an advocacy group for wines produced exclusively from non-irrigated vines. Since 2005 Evesham Wood has been associated with the international organic/biodynamic organization, “Renaissance des Appellations,” whose members are required to adhere to rigid organic and quality standards. Their Willamette Valley Pinot Noir has dried strawberry and dried orange zest on the nose, as well as ash. It is medium-to full-bodied with fine tannins and slate, stone, and bark undertones to the subtle fruit. Pairs well with grilled salmon, roast pork, coq au vin.
$27.99
2019 River Flatts Red
Varietals: 80% Marquette, 20% Petite Pearl Alc. 13.5%
As the grape growing culture of Massachusetts matures, new
hybrid grape varieties are being developed specifically for a
North American climate, and Westport is at the forefront of
these efforts. One grape variety they are having success with is
Marquette. This hybrid grape, genetically a grandchild of Pinot Noir, has been bred to withstand cooler northern climates and disease pressures. River Flatts Red is a blend of Marquette with Petite Pearl, another recent hybrid that brings a splash of Italian personality to the wine. The result is a wine with a fruity nose, a touch of autumn leaves, citrus rind, and a lovely bouquet of spice (cardamom and nutmeg). The wine is full of bright red cherry and fresh blackberry fruit flavors. Medium bodied yet quite refreshing, it needs a few minutes to open up to its full potential, but once it does it is lively, fresh, and food friendly. Pair with pizza, pasta with red sauce, and burgers. $29.99

WINES
Hedges CMS Sauvignon Blanc, Yakima Valley, Washington
In 1989, Tom and Anne-Marie Hedges bought 50 acres on Red Mountain in the Yakima Valley and planted 40 acres of Bordeaux grape varieties, and over the years, wine production has become a family affair: their daughter, Sarah Hedges-Goedhart, is the head winemaker and their son, Christopher Hedges, is the general manager. In 2008 they converted to biodynamic farming, and in 2015 they released the first biodynamic Cabernet Sauvignon in Washington. The combination of grapes in this Sauvignon Blanc produces a wine with a pleasant aromatic character and the 2021 is no exception. Zesty citrus fruit, white peach, gooseberry, touch of dried herbs, pineapple and pear. Lean, crisp, and refreshing it has flavors of pear, citrus, and a touch of baked apple and subtle shortbread. Pairs well with seafood, chicken, green vegetables, pesto.$18.99
André & Michel Quenard 2021 Chignin BlancLes Cristallins, Savoie. France
Varietal: Jacquere, Alc. 11%
Savoie is a land of snow-capped peaks, green rolling hills, wildflowers, and cold, sparkling mountain streams. This region hugs the western Alps, where Michel Quenard and his family farm 22 hectares of vineyards along the steep, rocky slopes of the Coteau de Torméry around Chignin. The limestone scree that makes up this vineyard land, resulting from millions of years of erosion of the majestic peaks of the Massif des Bauges, lends great character to the wines produced here. Michel’s grandfather started the estate in the 1930s but it was not until 1960 that Michel’s father, André, began bottling under their own label. Armed with a degree in viticulture and enology from Beaune, Michel joined the domaine in 1976, expanding vineyard holdings and making improvements to the cellar. Today, he is joined by his son Guillaume. The Jacquere grape features the clean, mineral quality often attributed to pinot grigio, and the grassy, herbal components and citrus of sauvignon blanc (predominantly lemon instead of grapefruit). While very dry, with high acidity, this wine is low in alcohol compared to many other dry white wines, making it very refreshing and drinkable. This Chignin “Les Cristallins” pours a pale yellow. The nose is floral, with citrus notes and a certain minerality. The palate offers tension, freshness, and aromas of flowers and fresh fruit. Serve as an aperitif, or during a traditional meal. Pairs well with asparagus in hollandaise sauce, pan-seared scallops, or fondue. $21.99

We’re pouring two Pinot Noirs from Oregon’s Paul O’Brien Winery. Paul O’Brien is the culmination of 20 years of friendship between two winemakers who share a passion for fine wine, great food, and a gracious life. Dyson Paul DeMara and Scott O’Brien Kelley met while working at Robert Mondavi Winery in the Napa Valley. Since then, they have travelled the world’s wine regions learning the old-world traditions and sharing new world techniques. In 2013 the duo came together to start the Umpqua Valley’s first urban winery in the historic Hansen Chevrolet building in downtown Roseburg, Oregon. The winery sources grapes from dry-farmed, hillside vineyards throughout the Umpqua Valley. They have partnered with eight different growers who are dedicated to growing the finest wine grapes for the Paul O’Brien wines.

Chateau d’Oupia LesHeretiques Pays D’Herault 2021,Languedoc, France
Varietals: 80% Carignan, 20%Grenache, Alc. 12%
The name Les Hérétiques is a nod to the Cathars, a heretical Christian group based in the Languedoc but wiped out by order of Pope Innocent III in 1208 in response to the murder of a papal representative by a Cathar supporter near Minervois. The castle which is the home of Château d’Oupia dates back to this time. Founder André Iché passed away in late 2007. His daughter, Marie-Pierre, currently runs the estate. She has been working since 2008 with oenologist Laurent Batlle, who continues to make the wine “André’s way.” The Carignan vines average 40 years in age, with some of them being over 100 years old. The fruit is sustainably farmed and harvested partly by hand and partly by machine. The Carignan remains in whole clusters and goes through a carbonic maceration in tank. The Grenache is destemmed and goes through a 3-4-week maceration in concrete vats. Fermentation is with selected yeasts. The two varieties are blended and aged in tank. The wine is bottled with a light, non-sterile filtration. Dark ruby in color, the wine has lots of rich, peppery, red and black fruit and a strong tannic structure. Pairs well with turkey, duck, roasted pork. $14.99

WINES
Domaine des Cognettes Muscadet Sèvre et Maine “Sélection,” Loire, France
Varietal: MelonBlanc, Alc. 12%
Brothers Stéphane and Vincent Perraud are the seventh generation of winegrowers continuing the family tradition at the Domaine des Cognettes, in the heart of the small medieval village of Clisson. Passionate about vines and wine, Stéphane and Vincent turned to organic farming, certain that nature does not need chemistry. The soul of the estate is the Melon de Bourgogne, a unique grape variety from which Muscadet is made. Stéphane and Vincent’s cuvées are shaped by the granite and gabbro terroirs that characterize the estate’s wines, by the exposure of the plots, by the age of the vines in each vineyard and by the weather that is different each year. The manual harvest allows selection of the most beautiful bunches, an essential element for fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The entire estate is grown organically, without chemical fertilizers, weedkillers, insecticides and synthetic chemicals. The cuvée “Selection of Cognettes” is the perfect example. The nose offers fine and subtle aromas mixing notes of gunflint and candied lemon. On the palate, it is lively and rich, with a slightly sparkling hint and a saline and iodized finish with citrus notes. Serve as an aperitif. Pairs well with oysters, sushi, seafood. $17.99
Domaine Franz Chagnoleau 2021 Macon-Villages Clos Saint Pancras, Burgundy, France
Varietal: Gamay Alc. 12.5%
Domaine Frantz Chagnoleau is a small estate run by Frantz Chagnoleau and his wife, Caroline Gon. Frantz has a degree in oenology and cut his teeth working for Olivier Merlin in the Mâconnais. Caroline holds two degrees in agricultural engineering and oenology; she worked at Newton Vineyards in Napa Valley before returning to France to work with Dominique Lafon as head winemaker for Héritiers du Comte Lafon. Since 2013 all of the vineyards have been certified organic. This dynamic duo believe in minimal intervention, which includes the use of only indigenous yeast, as the best way to express the nuances of each unique terroir. Aging is done in mostly large, used French oak, harvest is done completely by hand on a plot by plot basis, allowing each vine to achieve the appropriate balance of sugar and acidity before being picked. They are making micro-quantities of single vineyard White Burgundy from some of the finest Chardonnay terroir in the world. The Clos Saint Pancras has aromas of apple, pear, apricot, lemon, pineapple, kiwi, butter, cream, and vanilla on the nose, and these follow on the palate. Pairs well with grilled chicken, grilled salmon, fried calamari. $25.99
Domaine Tour Campanets, Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence Rosé, Provence, France
Domaine Tour Campanets is nestled in the hills outside of Aix-en-Provence, surrounded by woods and waterfalls. In this idyllic setting, they make certified organic wine. The domaine takes great care in making this rosé. They harvest the grapes at night to limit oxidation. Then they press the grapes and let the skins spend only a few hours in contact with the juice before fermentation. This short amount of time produces the whisper of a pink hue. This aromatic, refreshing, and light Provence rosé boasts flavors of wild strawberries and other red fruits. It is elegant and refined.
Pairs well with grilled meats, cheese, and desserts. $19.99
Domaine Preignes le Vieux Rouge, Languedoc, France
The Vic family has owned and operated Domaine Preignes le Vieux for over a century, since Jérôme’s great, great grandfather, François Bergon, purchased the property in 1905. Today, Jérôme and his wife, Aurélie, represent the fifth generation of wine growers. The estate is comprised of 340 hectares surrounding one of the oldest châteaux in the region. The château is built on the site of the Roman Villa Preixanum, which dates back to 118 BCE. Remains of amphoras have been excavated from the property, giving proof to the intense winemaking history of Preignes. Jérôme and Aurélie farm 18 different varietals grown on soils of granite, volcanic ash, and basalt, which enjoy a microclimate with maritime influence. Preignes le Vieux’s Réserve du Domaine rouge is a four-grape blend of Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, and Merlot. The wine pours a deep ruby red in the glass, emitting aromas of ripe red fruits kissed with an earthy, olive note. The palate is medium-bodied, well-balanced, and fresh with flavors of spiced red raspberries that ride a wave of soft tannins and delicate acidity to a long, supple finish. Pair with linguine with tuna Puttanesca Ora Provençal , beef stew. $14.99
Maison Ventenac L’intrus Rouge, Languedoc, France
Varietal: Cabernet Franc Alc. 13.5 %
Stephanie and Olivier Ramé took over her family’s 160 hectare estate in 2010. Building on the work of Stephanie’s father, Alain Maurel, they started to modernize the operation, which in many cases meant turning back the clock to work sustainably in the vineyards. Their aim was to work naturally, but as cleanly as possible, to express the terroir. Olivier’s expertise in oenology and viticulture led them to use experimental techniques, such as employing non-saccharomyces yeast to avoid spoilage, allowing indigenous yeasts to ferment the wine without competition from Brettanomyces and the like. This duality of modern and traditional is mirrored in the appellation of Cabardès, where the transitional climate allows Atlantic grapes from Bordeaux to flourish alongside the Mediterranean varieties. With a vibrant red color, still filled with delicate purple hues, L’ intrus shines on the nose with dominant notes of raspberry and blueberry with hints of green pepper and peppermint. The palate charms with a juicy mouthfeel and typical Cabernet Franc flavors of violet flower and ripe berry flavors. Pairs well with lamb, red meats. $19.99

FINE WINE TASTING @ SAVOUR WITH GORDON ALEXANDER, OWNER OF TERROIR WINES
“A vineyard’s terroir is what makes each wine unique. It is everything that contributes to the distinction of a vineyard plot. It determines which grape varieties will thrive there. The best winemakers help the grapes to express their uniqueness, without technical intervention or heavy processing.”
” Terroir Wines is dedicated to the principle that place matters. We work with winemakers around the world that cherish their land, produce wines that express the sense of place, and that work with minimal intervention in the vineyard and the cellar. Most are organic, some biodynamic, all sustainable. Our wines are as unique and individual as their makers… and their terroir.”

WINES
Ronco Margherita Ribolla Gailla, Venezia Giulia, Italy
Varietals: Ribolla Gailla Alc 13%
Ronco Margherita was founded in 2009 by Alessandro Bellio, a winemaker and vineyard management consultant with 20 years experience in vineyards all over northern Italy. The estate was formerly owned by Ruggero Forti, an ampelographer who specialized in the recovery of ancient indigenous Friulian varietals, and who is widely considered one of the fathers of modern Friulian viticulture. Working with the base of Forti’s vines, Bellio and his wife, Margherita (for whom the estate is named), have created one of the most innovative estates in the region.
Today the Ronco Margherita estate works its lands organically, with green cover between the rows and no use of chemical fertilizers or other treatments. The vines strain to reach the subterranean water sources, and fill the fruit with beautiful minerality, focus and a great sense of their terroir. From one of the regions autochthonous varieties, Ronco’s Ribolla is made from destemmed grapes, macerated in stainless, followed by fermentation and about 5 months rest in tanks before clarifying and bottling. A lovely example of Ribolla, it has an elegant and intense aroma, floral, fruity and fragrant, with notes of acacia flowers, yellow peach, and quince. On the palate it is dry with good acidity. Pairs well with fish dishes, fish soups, and vegetables. $ 19.99
Bonfante & Chiarle traces its origins to 1908, and the firm achieved its present structure in 1975 thanks to the efforts of Luciano Chiarle, Giorgio Chiarle, and Domenico Bonfante, following in the footsteps of their fathers and their grandfathers before them. Today, Bonfante & Chiarle is recognized as one of the top producers in Monferrato, as well as in Roero and the Langhe. Working a combination of domaine vineyards and vineyards under long-term contract, B&C work the land using green cover rather than herbicides and Integrated Pest Management in place of pesticides. Their cellars are modern, with a mix of temperature-controlled stainless, oak Barriques, and classic giant Slavonian oak barrels holding 2500 liters or more. Their wines are clean and classically styled, with crisp acidity, focused fruit, and great balance. The Rosato Reusa is a blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera, macerated for just a few hours to develop a beautiful light salmon color. It has intense herbal notes, with hints of fresh flowers and light spiciness on the nose and is fruity and intense on the palate. Pairs well with cured meats, fish dishes, and cheese. $21.99
Tenuta Carretta Roero Arneis Riserva Canorei,
Varietal: Arneis Alc. 14%
Founded in 1470, Tenuta Carretta is one of the most important estates in the Langhe/Roero district. It changed hands several times during the centuries until the early 1980s, when it finally passed to the Miroglio family, wealthy textile manufacturers in Alba. Today they continue to own the estate which operates under Managing Director Davide Chiarle. Carretta produces a full range of wines, including a lovely Dolcetto Superiore, a Barbaresco, and this single-vineyard Arneis Riserva from Carretta’s oldest vineyard, a legally recognized monopole. The wine is fermented and aged in barrique, then bottle aged before release. Aromas of pear, white peach, vanilla, and buttered toast and vanilla are followed on the palate by ripe flavors and an oily texture, with mouth-coating viscosity and a concentrated finish with superb length. This unique wine drinks in many ways like a great Meursault. Pairs well with risottos, chicken, pork, grilled meats. $34.99
Northern Portugal is dominated by two great wine regions- the vast Vinho Verde region nearer the coast and the wild and craggy Douro River valley to the east. The Douro has its headwaters further east flanking the Spanish Pyrenees (where it is called the Duero River and delineates the famed Ribera del Duero wine region), then flows through a steep, narrow valley lined with terraced vineyards before the rushing torrent calms as the hills flatten out, eventually reaching the Atlantic at the twin cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, the capital of the Port wine industry. The Douro wine region is situated around the Douro River valley and lower valleys of its tributaries Varosa, Corgo, Távora, Torto, and Pinhão. The region is sheltered from Atlantic winds by the Marão and Montemuro mountains. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot and dry summers and cold winters. The main red grape varieties found in the Douro region include with Bastardo, Mouriscotinto, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cão, Tinta Roriz (the same as Spain’s Tempranillo), Touriga Francesa, and Touriga Nacional. The Gateway Douro Red has aromas and flavors of red and black berries and raspberry jam, with a touch of tobacco, juicy acidity, and bold, chewy, tannins. The textures and flavors turn chocolaty with air and the flavors stay big through the firm finish. Pairs well with hamburgers, grilled steak, grilled chicken. $14.99
Castro Ventosa Bierzo Mencia Joven, Bierzo, Spain
Varietal: Mencia Alc. 14%
Castro Ventosa was founded by the Perez family in 1752 and the family has owned the estate ever since. The Perez family owns 75 hectares of Mencía vineyards in Bierzo, making them the biggest owners of this varietal within the Bierzo D.O. The Bierzo appellation is made of 5,000 hectares with 2,500 planted with white varietals and 2,500 planted with Mencía; there are 5,000 landowners within the appellation. Raúl Pérez, who now runs the winery, is a figurehead for Bierzo wines in Spain. Castro Ventosa produces three different Mencía; Valtuille, El Castro de Valtuille and El Castro de Valtuille “Joven Mencia.” Mencía is indigenous to Bierzo, and some suspect that it is an ancient clone from Cabernet Franc. When it comes to the grape Mencia, Raul Perez is obsessive; no detail is overlooked in his quest to accurately express the purity of true Mencia in the region. Fermented in stainless steel tanks and then left in oak vats for 3 months, the wine produced is fresh and without a ton of oak characteristics despite the malolactic fermentation. On the nose, herbal notes mix with wild berries. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and fruit forward with notes of graphite and good acidity. Pairs well with venison, poultry, or veal. $17.99
