FINE WINE TASTING @ SAVOUR WITHDAVE BENDER OF VINEYARD ROAD WINES
Since 2000, Vineyard Road has offered high-quality and high-value wines that reflect their soils of origin. Some of the estates represented have been around for only 5 years. Others have been making wine for more than 500. Vineyard Road specializes in small production and artisanal producers who work in concert with the land to produce wines of distinct and authentic character.
WINES
Elektrisch Riesling 2020, Rheinhessen, Germany
Varietal: Riesling, Alc. 10%
The Rheinhessen region has gone from being derided as the land of Liebfraumilch to being the white-hot, super star of Germany. Florian Fauth, the winemaker of Elektrisch, happens to be the brother-in-law of Klaus Peter Keller, one of the pioneers who helped make the Rheinhessen one of the superstar regions of Germany. It is a delicate art to bring out the right amounts of sweetness and acidity in Riesling, and Fauth is able to do it, while crafting wines that are harmonious and vibrant. Mouthwatering acidity, citrusy aromatics, and flavors of granny smith apples will make you appreciate a wine that is fruity in the right way. This is an impressive wine that shows incredible value. This biodynamic, fruit-forward halbtrocken (off-dry) Riesling Kabinett from the Rheinhessen is juicy and thirst-quenching, showing tart citrus and wet stones, marked by lively acidity. Pairs well with sushi, Asian food, and salty blue cheese, like Stilton. $17.99
Domaine les Capreoles Cossinelle Rose, France
Varietal: Gamay, Alc. 13%
Capreoles is a newer Beaujolais estate that has made a big impression on both sides of the Atlantic. Cedric and Catherine Lescarreaux took over abandoned vineyards and began to farm them organically and biodynamically. Their daughter Margot loved finding cossinelles (ladybugs) in the vineyards on the eve of their first harvest in 2014. They thought the fresh and colorful childish name seemed perfect to reflect the spirit of their rosé.
Pale pink, fruity and very aromatic, it will seduce with its freshness and mouthfeel. It is light, fresh, and lively, the Gamay grape at its best. Pairs well with cured meats, Caprese salad, soft and tangy cheeses. $19.99
Azienda Agricola Platinetti Guido, Ghemme, Italy
We’re pouring two wines from Azienda Agricola Platinetti Guido, a vineyard started at the beginning of the 20th century by Carlo Platinetti and Gaudenzio Fontana, respectively the great- grandfather and grandfather of the current owners. They cultivated vineyards in the most suitable areas around Ghemme and vinified in the winery inside Castello Ricetto, in the heart of the town. World War II interrupted the agricultural pursuits of these valleys, causing a drastic decline in the number of vineyards in what was one of the regions of Italy with the most grapevines, and famed for the unique quality of the wines it produced. During the first half of the 1970s, Gaudenzio’s son Mario resumed cultivation of his father’s historic plots. With the help of his father-in-law, Guido, who was Carlo’s son, he founded Azienda Agricola Platinetti Guido and began planting new Nebbiolo grapevines on Ronco al Maso, the hill nearest the town. The vineyard is now owned and run by Mario’s three children, Stefano, Maria, and Andrea Fontana. Andrea, who graduated from the Alba School of Oenology, tends the vineyards and manages all the winemaking processes himself, together with his son Pietro.
Platinetti Guido Ghemme 2018
Varietal: Nebbiolo, Alc. 14%
Despite regulations allowing the addition of up to 15% of Vespolina or Bonarda grapes, Platinetti’s Ghemme DOCG is produced using solely this wine region’s most famed grape variety namely, Nebbiolo. Only the best clusters from the vineyard are used. Traditionally, these few select rows are left until last during the harvest in order to let the grapes fully mature on the plant. Aging continues for two years in large oak barrels, and then is rounded off with a year in the bottle before being released. This wine should be opened at least an hour before drinking. Intense garnet colour with excellent transparency. It offers a rich and assorted range of aromas, distinguished by hints of red fruit jam, blueberry and mulberry. This is followed by hints of balsamic, surrounded by delicate ferrous minerals and ferrous nuances. On the palate there are intriguing notes of licorice and tobacco. Pairs well with beef, veal, and game meats. $39.99
Platinetti GuidoColline Novaresi DOC Vespolina
Varietal: Vespolina Alc. 12.5%
The Vespolina grapes are the first to be harvested and are fermented in contact with the skins for a maximum of five days in steel vats. After racking, aging continues in steel vats for a minimum of six months followed by further bottle aging for at least another four months. The intense fruity, youthful and slight minerality of the bouquet gives way to a smooth, fresh mouthfeel, which is enlivened by its light, pleasant acidity. A balance of light flavors is interwoven with a decisive spiciness, which is a characteristic of this grape variety. Pairs well with fresh cheeses, pork sausages with herbs, and grilled chicken. $24.99
Doris Red Table Wine, Sonoma Valley, California
Varietals: Zinfandel, Barbera, Merlot, Alc. 14.5%
Originally from Providence, Dan O’Brien honed his wine knowledge behind the bar and as a sommelier in Boston before being recruited to build the wine cellar for the Michelin-starred Cavallo Point in Marin, California. While living in California, Dan’s passion for wine grew, and he began working harvests at L’Aventure in Paso Robles and Larkmead in Napa, eventually becoming a consultant for new wineries in Napa and Sonoma. Using his knowledge, experience and connections, Dan founded his own label, Gail Wines, in 2013 with the goal of highlighting both classic and off-the-beaten-path varieties across the Sonoma Valley. He works with organically farmed fruit from Bennett Valley, Carneros, Moon Mountain District, Sonoma Valley, and Sonoma Mountain. In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, Dan makes wines from traditional grapes like Chardonnay and Merlot as well as lesser utilized varietals like Chenin Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Franc and Barbera. Doris is Gail Wines’ sister label, a nod to the European table wines Dan’s great-aunt Doris would serve to friends and family while hosting traditional Italian-American feasts in her backyard. A blend of Zinfandel, Barbera, and Merlot from fruit sourced in the Sonoma Valley, it is deep purple in color with incredibly expressive aromas of black cherries, fresh earth, plum, and dried cranberry. The palate is sleek and well-defined with power and depth that is balanced by soft, graceful tannins and lively acidity. The finish is juicy and bursting with ripe fruit flavors. Pairs well with steak, barbecued meats. $23.99

WINES
Noelia Ricci Bro’ Trebbiano,
Varietal: Trebbiano, Alc. 13%
Noelia Ricci is a project started in 2010 within Pandolfa, an estate rich in history and stretching over an area of 140 hectares at the foot of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. The estate was acquired by Giuseppe Ricci in 1941, but he did not turn the land to agriculture and vineyards until the 1950s, when he planted Sangiovese, Trebbiano, and Albana grapes. Ricci’s daughter took over upon her father’s death in 1980 and started planting new vineyards and building a winery. In 2010, Marco Cirese, one of Noelia’s great-grandchildren, began the Noelia Ricci project, a tribute to the classic winemaking style, with a contemporary approach.By avoiding over-extraction, excessive alcohol content and highly concentrated colors, he strives to make wines having a fine structure, strong personality and complexity, while maintaining an inviting approach and pursuing drinkability. The Bro’ Trebbiano is straw yellow with golden reflections. Delicate fruit scents, lemon zest, florals, and citrus aromas lead to a palate that is fresh and has flavor consistent with the bouquet. It is round and balanced, with a citrus and mineral backbone, and notes of bitter fruit on the finish. Pairs well with risottos, white meats. $19.99
Illahe Viognier, Willamette Valley, Oregon
Varietal: Viognier, Alc.12%
Illahe, pronounced Ill-Uh-Hee, is a local Chinook word meaning “earth” or “place” or “soil.”At Illahe, owners Lowell and Pauline Ford strive to make wine as naturally as possible from soil to bottle. They work by hand on small lots with age-old techniques and materials. The focus is to grow and make quality Pinot Noir and white wines that express the vintage and their varietal characteristics without enzymes or additives. Some of the wines are made entirely by hand, with no electricity or modern mechanization; they use a gentle wooden basket press. They are committed to dry agriculture and responsible water practices and do not irrigate mature plants. As one of Oregon’s few horse-powered vineyards, they use a team of Percheron draft horses to mow and deliver grapes to the winery at harvest. The Illahe Viognier has aromas of white peach, nectarine, dragon fruit, pineapple, jasmine, and sweet pea. The palate is clean with vibrant acidity, and it has a refreshing finish. Pairs well with salmon, roast chicken, spicy food. $ 27.99
Ameztoi is a renowned producer in Getariako Txakolina, respected for producing both traditional wines in large barrels and as an innovator for their rosé txakolina and method traditionnelle sparkling wines. Ameztoi owns twenty hectares of estate vineyards facing the Bay of Biscay, high on the slopes rising above Getaria, an ancient Basque fishing village on Spain’s rugged northern coast. Ignacio Ameztoi is the fifth generation of his family to carry on the tradition of making txakolina in the province of Getaria and has played a key role in the advancement of the region. Ameztoi Rubentis rosé is a field blend of the local, indigenous hondarrabizuri and hondarrabibeltza varieties, grown on traditional trellises. In the 2000s, when almost all of the other local wineries gave up on the indigenous red hondarrabibeltza vines, the Ameztoi family retained their old vines. Rubentis, the region’s first pink wine, was inspired by the historic claret style wines which were once produced in the area. The backbone of the blend comes from an old hondarrabibeltza vineyard planted in 1840, preserved by the Ameztoi family for generations. The Ameztoi Rubentis pours pale pink with fine, elegant bubbles, the result of natural fermentation. Aromas of citrus and menthol are followed on the palate by notes of strawberry and caramel. Pairs well with oysters, sushi, seafood tempura.$24.99
Domaine Arnoux Savigny-Les-Beaune, Burgundy, France
Varietal: Pinot Noir, Alc.14.5%
For many generations, Domaine Arnoux Père &Fils has thrived in the village of Chorey-lès-Beaune, where they perpetuate the Burgundy wine tradition. Created by René, his children Michel and Rémi began to expand the Domaine and develop the bottling. In 1990, Pascal joined his uncles and produced his first vintage in 2007. As the head of the winery, Pascal, supported by wife Caroline, combines savoir-faire and new technologies to protect the vineyard and offer wines of great quality.Today, the Domaine covers more than 20 hectares, divided between the villages of Chorey-lès-Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune, Aloxe-Corton, Beaune and Pernand Vergelesses. The Savigny-Les-Beaune pours a deep red color.Aromas of Morello cherry, blackcurrant, and raspberry mix with spicy notes and lead to a refined and supple palate. It is a delicate and elegant wine. Pairs well with roast pork, grilled chicken, risotto. $42.99
Illahe Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon
Varietal: Pinot Noir, Alc. 14%
Home of some of the most elegant and expressive Pinot Noir in the world, the Willamette Valley is a mixed landscape of green, rolling hills, dramatic forestlands and small, independent, wine growers. As a leader in environmental stewardship, the valley has some of the nation’s most protective land use policies, with two-thirds of its vineyards farmed sustainably and over half, organically. At Illahe, in addition to using using draft horses to plow and to transport the grapes, they use solar power and the winery buildings are gravity-flow, featuring three levels, and using the natural slope of the site, starting from the crush pad to the fermenters and the press below. A further drop-off from the fermentation room to the press level means the press baskets can be loaded by hand. The care that is taken with the land and the grapes shows in the wine. The Pinot Noir has aromas of ripe plum, nutmeg, cigar box, and vanilla bean. The fruit on the palate — cherry torte, tamarind paste, strawberry jam, anise – along with nutmeg and cinnamon spice, help develop a balanced and weighted mouth feel with good acidity and smooth, lingering tannins. Pairs well with grilled salmon, coq au vin, mushroom pasta. $31.99

WINES
Long Meadow Ranch Rutherford Sauvignon Blanc, Napa California
Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc Alc. 13%
In the late 1800’s, the Long Meadow Ranch property thrived with vineyards, apple orchards, olive groves, hay, and a goat milk dairy, but farming fell dormant during Prohibition. The property was swallowed by the encroaching forest until the Hall family bought the property in 1989. The family cut back the abandoned olive trees and replanted the vineyards and apple orchards and instituted an organic, sustainable, integrated farming system. They make their own fertilizers on the ranch through an extensive composting operation that relies on organic material from each segment of the ranch and they use solar energy for power. The Rutherford Estate has 74 acres planted to Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. The estate is also home to fruits and vegetables, beehives, and growing flock of egg-laying chickens. Long Meadow’s Rutherford Sauvignon Blanc has rich aromas of pink grapefruit, lemon verbena, and lychee on the nose that carry through to lime zest, lemon curd, and guava on the palate. Crisp, clean, elegant, and mouthwatering.
Pairs well with oysters, fresh crab, basil pesto, goat cheese with honey. $27.99
La Spinetta Toscana Vermentino, Tuscany, Italy
Varietals: Vermentino, Alc.13%
La Spinetta was founded in the Piedmont region in the early 1960s by Giuseppe and Lidia Rivetti. After 40 years of working with indigenous grape varieties in Piedmont, making Moscato, Barbera, Barbaresco, Barber d’Alba, and Barolo, the family acquired land in Tuscany. They brought the same respect for indigenous varietals to their Tuscan vineyard, producing Sangiovese, Chianti, and Vermentino. The La Spinetta Vermentino Toscana pours a yellow straw color with green hues.
There are hints of citrus, almond, and wildflowers on the nose.
It is fresh and firm on the palate, with hints of thyme and marjoram. The finish is long and mineral.
Pairs well with appetizers, fish, seafood pasta. $19.99
Averaen 2021 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir AVA, Oregon
Varietal: Pinot Noir, Alc. 13.6%
The seeds of Averaen winery were sown at the International Pinot Noir Celebration in 2013 in the Willamette Valley. The winemakers from Banshee Wines in Sonoma were struck by the similarities between the cold, foggy Sonoma coast and the Willamette Valley, and realized making high-quality Pinot Noir in the Willamette Valley would be far less expensive than in Sonoma. The first Averaen Pinot Noir was released in 2015 to high praise, and they have continued to produce fine Pinot Noir ever since. The 2019 Averaen Pinot Noir is juicy, with flavors of dark cherry, cranberry, and blackberry. Black tea, anise, blood orange, and vanilla accents add complexity. The texture is ripe and plush with a line of acid running through.
Pairs well with seared salmon or tuna, mushroom dishes, pulled pork, and barbecue. $22.99
Edmeades 2019 Mendocino County Zinfandel, Varietal: Zinfandel, Alc.15%
In 1963, Dr. Donald Edmeades, a Pasadena cardiologist, planted grapes in the tiny hamlet of Philo, in the Anderson Valley, making him the first modern-day grower to do so in that remote stretch of western Mendocino County. His son, Deron, began Edmeades Winery in 1972. It quickly gained a reputation for lusty, mountain Zinfandels that won gold medals and high scores from critics. In fact, Edmeades helped launch the fame of these intense, hillside Mendocino Zins. The 2019 Mendocino County Zinfandel begins with concentrated aromas of baking spices including cinnamon and cloves, which give way to aromas of blackberries, black currants, and dried sage. The texture is round, and the fruit expression is focused and lush. Subtle and integrated tannins accentuate the richness of the wine, while pleasant acidity keeps it fresh on the finish.
Pairs well with barbecued chicken, eggplant Parmesan, winter stew, char-broiled burgers. $19.99
Van Zellers Vinho Tinto, Douro, Portugal, Varietal: 30 indigenous grape varieties, planted in different field blends in vineyards in several areas of the Cima Corgo, in the Douro region, Alc. 14%
The Van Zeller family has been involved in the Portuguese wine trade since 1780 when they established one of the country’s most successful Port shipping companies. Fruit for this bottling is sourced from selected vineyards in the Douro Valley and the grapes are then trodden by foot in traditional lagares or stone troughs. Following vinification the young wine is then aged in oak casks for 6 months to add complexity and polish. The result is a smooth, rich style of red with ample dark berry, plum and cherry notes along with hints of winter spice, tobacco leaf and licorice from the oak ageing.
Firm tannins and a long finish make this a great match for charcuterie, roasted red meats and tomato-based pasta dishes. $29.99
