WINES

La Calcinara Clochard, Marche,Italy

Varietal: 90%Verdicchio, 10% ChardonnayAlc.13%

Located in the rolling hills of Ancona in the Marche, on the eastern coast of Italy, La Calcinara is headed up by the Berluti siblings, Paolo and Eleonora. Their energy, enthusiasm, and love of wine is infectious. Their 12 hectares of vines and olive groves are farmed organically, and they make their wine with minimal intervention, using only very low additions of SO2 at bottling. This wine is named “Clochard,” which means vagrant in French, because it is made with Verdicchio vines that lie outside the Verdicchio Castelli DOC boundary. On the nose, Clochard has notes of lime zest, spring hawthorn and apple blossom, with a touch of cardamom. The palate is zippy, with flavors of lime juice, a gentle bitter and creamy almond note, and briny freshness, finishing with a long, yellow-pepper accented tang.

Pairs well with anchovies, shellfish, and fish dishes. $21.99

Troupis Holy Mania, Mantineia, Greece

Varietal: Moscofilero Alc.13.5%

The Troupis family has a long history of work in agronomy dating back to the ’70s where vines, fruit bearing trees and flowers have been grown and sold from their nursery in Mantineia. Over time, their efforts in the cultivation of vines grew into the desire to share their passion with others. Troupis Winery is located in the heart of Mantineia in the Peloponnese at an altitude of 700 meters in the region of Fteri. Tasos Troupis, supported by his children, has created a small-capacity production and wine-making family business; they produce and bottle wine exclusively from their estate vineyards, which total approximately 16 acres.

On the nose, Troupis’ crisp Moscofilero displays the slight perfumes of the surrounding Arcadian underbrush and bramble, along with jasmine and rose. On the palate, citrus fruit combines with violets, spices and the intense acidity with which Moscofilero has become synonymous. The wine has a long, complex mineral finish.

Pairs well with cucumber salads, chicken dishes, Greek fish soup. $21.99

Rings Pfalz Riesling 2020, Germany

Varietal: Riesling Alc.13.5%

The Rings winery, part of the Palatinate top wineries league, is nestled in the sun-kissed Palatinate, in the middle of the wine-growing community of Freinsheim. For over a decade now, the new generation of the Rings family has been passionately focused on organic production of high-quality dry wines. The brothers Andreas and Steffen took over responsibility for the winery from their parents in 2008. In 2015, the winery was included in the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wineries) and was awarded 4 grapes in the Gault-Millau Wine Guide in 2017.The Riesling pours crystal clear, with aromas of grapefruit, apple, and peach. On the palate, it is full, with hints of citrus, apple and peach, ripe acidity, and minerality on the dry finish.

Pairs well with sushi, spicy foods, salmon.$21.99

Pra Morandina Valpolicella 2020, Veneto, Italy

Varietal: Corvina Alc. 12.5%

Graziano Pra followed his father and grandfather into the wine business, studying oenology, and taking over the family winery in Soave in the early 1980s. After searching for the right site, Graziano began the new millennium by fulfilling his long-held ambition and purchasing a 13-hectare vineyard near Mezzane in eastern Valpolicella. He farms the land organically, using no chemical treatments. During September and October, the grapes are harvested, de-stemmed and pressed, and left to macerate and ferment for 15 days in vertical vats. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in stainless steel followed by 3 to 6 months’ maturation in Allier oak casks. This is a vibrant, fragrant Valpolicella with intensity yet delicacy from the low yields of the Morandina vineyards. Bright red berry aromas with notes of wild thyme lead to a fresh, sappy wine with layers of raspberry leaf, licorice and cherry. It has a juicy, fresh yet silky mouthfeel and a balancing acidity that combine for a long finish.

Pairs well with grilled vegetables, seafood stew, risotto, roasted chicken. $24.99

Castello di Potentino Sacromontino 2021, Tuscany, Italy

Varietal: Sangiovese Alc. 14%

Run by the Greene family, who are British transplants to Italy, as an old-fashioned Residenzad’Epoca, the Castello di Potentino warmly welcomes visitors all year round. The Castle is also a fully functioning farm. They make their own award-winning wines and olive oil and love to forage for local ingredients in the fields around the castle. Their Sacromontino is medium garnet in color, and shows aromas of red cherries, tomato leaf, espresso, and oregano on the nose. The palate is medium bodied with flavors of cherry, blueberry, and black tea spices. The wine has fine-grained tannins and marked acidity, and the finish is dry and earthy.

Pairs well with pizza, pasta, and Italian beef stew. This is is a great buy – a full liter for only $19.99!

While you’re in the store, take a look at some of the new beers we have: Maine Beer’s flagship IPA, Lunch; another Maine Beer favorite, Peeper, a smooth pale ale with hints of citrus and some malt sweetness; and one of the best Belgian-style white beers this side of Belgium, Allagash White — made with coriander and curaçao orange peel, it’s lovely on a hot summer day.

WINES

Domaine Hamelin Petit Chablis 2020, France

Varietals: ChablisAlc.12.5%

The Hamelin family has been growing vines in Chablis for six generations, each generation adding to the holdings and developing the winemaking techniques. The domaine now stands at 37 hectares, spread between the villages of Poinchy, Beines, and Lignorelles. Grapes for the Petit Chablis are grown in the village of Lignorelles, on the edge of the Chablis vineyards. Most of the vines are on a plateau, and the soil is slightly clayey. Minimal treatments are used in the vineyards, and grass is allowed to grow between rows in a third of them. The Petit Chablis shows subtle aromas of white flowers and green apples on the nose. On the palate it is elegant, dry with good fruit and a touch of steely minerality in the finish.

Pairs well with seafood, chicken, pork, Thai curry. $26.99

Gothic Nevermore Pinot Noir 2018,Willamette Valley, Oregon, Varietal: Pinot NoirAlc.13%

Perhaps the most familiar wine producing region in Oregon, the Willamette Valley is actually a group of distinct AVA’s (American Viticultural Areas). This varied area is home to approximately two thirds of Oregon’s wineries. Bounded roughly by the cities of Portland in the north and Eugene in the south, the near-idyllic wine growing region is cradled between the Cascade Mountain Range on its east side and the Coastal Range to the west. It produces some of America’s most sublime expressions of Pinot Noir. From the northern slopes of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, Nevermore is a dark, elegant Pinot Noir. Vibrant aromas of cherries, raspberries, and smoky vanilla on the nose are followed by blackberry, spice and a silky mouthfeel on the palate.

Pairs well with mushroom dishes and pork roast. $29.99

Domaine La Ligiere Côtes du Rhône Sud Absolu, Rhône Valley, France

Varietals: Grenache, Syrah Alc.14.5%

Domaine La Ligiere is a certified organic, practicing biodynamic estate located in the Beaumes de Venise region of the Southern Rhone. A blend of 30-year-old Grenache and Syrah vines, the 2019 Sud Absolu is medium bodied and complexly layered, with just the right balance of savory red and dark fruits delicately complimented by a touch of freshly ground black pepper and notes of Provençal herbs and spices. Elegant and complex with moderate tannins and very easy drinking, this is a seriously good food wine.

Pairs well with wild game, poultry, and Mediterranean inspired dishes.

 $15.99

Estelle et Rodolphe Cognard Saint-Nicolas de Bourgeuil Cuvée Les Malgagnes, France

Varietal: Cabernet Franc Alc. 12%

Domaine Estelle et Rodolphe Cognardhas been a family-owned estate since 1974, and now the estate spans 15 hectares of vines in St Nicolas de Bourgueil and Bourgueil. The vineyards are devoted in entirety to Cabernet Franc, with the rows of vines interspersed with grass to keep down the weeds and to force the vines to root deeper for nourishment. Since the 1980s, the estate had practiced lutte raisonnée, or reasoned agriculture, but in 2017 they made the decision to convert to organic agriculture, and 2018 was their first organic vintage. In 2020, their domain was officially certified organic. Les Malgagnes pours a dark brick color. The intense nose combines scents of raspberry, blackberry, and blueberry with notes of new leather and toasted nuances. The mouthfeel is fleshy, with flavors of strawberry, blackcurrant, spice, and vanilla on the palate and a long, elegant finish.

Pairs well with Buffalo burgers and grilled steak, as well as vegetarian dishes and salads. $27.99

Kientzler Gewürztraminer, Alsace, France

Varietal: Gewürztraminer Alc.13.5%

The Kientzler family has been growing vines for more than five  generations in Ribeauvillé and the surrounding area. As early as 1866, Dominique Alphonse Kientzler had inherited vines from his father and grandfather and in 1895 was involved in the creation of France’s first winemaking cooperative in Ribeauvillé, in addition to running the local grocery shop. His son Alphonse carried on the grocery business while also tending to the vines; he eventually became the Mayor of Ribeauvillé. It was Alphonse’s son François though, who was the first to fully concentrate on wine production, taking himself off to Switzerland to study viticulture. By the 1970s, he was joined by his son André in the wine business and the pair undertook a massive replanting program to replace much of the old Chasselas with the noble Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Gewürztraminer varieties. Today, the Kientzlers farm almost 14 hectares of vines in Ribeauvillé, Bergheim, Hunawihr, and Riquewihr, including significant parcels in the Grand Crus of Geisberg, Osterberg, and Kirchberg. They are working toward making the winery completely organic by 2023. This Gewürztraminer is fresh and delicately perfumed with restraint and lovely fine acidity buffering its richness. Intense and exotic aromas of lychee, tropical fruit, and pepper on the nose are followed by a delicate fruity sweetness in the mouth. The spicy profile and fine acidity make for a long, elegant finish.

Pairs well with coconut curry, mango salad, asparagus, or lamb with dried-fruit cous-cous, as well as all Thai food and sheep’s milk cheeses. $24.99

FINE WINE TASTING @ SAVOUR WITH OWNER, KATHLEEN MORGAN – BIODYNAMIC WINES

Biodynamic vs. Organic

Biodynamic farming was first developed in the 1920s by Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian spiritual philosopher. Simply put, biodynamics is organic wine taken a step further. Just as organic farming takes into account the life around it by growing without the use of toxic chemical pesticides or herbicides, biodynamic farming then encourages and cultivates a symbiotic biosphere wherein all species depend on and nurture one another. These species include anything from soil types to other plants insects, animals and native yeasts. They then plant, harvest, and prune based on a precise calendar that takes into account lunar cycles and the position of the sun and planets. In terms of taste, biodynamic wines are very similar to organic wines, as they are produced similarly. However, compared to conventionally produced wine, organically grown wine has been proven to taste much better. This is likely due to the heightened terroir that comes with organically produced wine. Because organic and biodynamic wines are made in harmony with their surroundings, these “natural” flavors flourish in these wines more than they do in conventionally produced wines.

                                                                Kathleen

BIODYNAMIC WINES

Patrice Colin makes wonderful wine from his family’s well-established domain in one of France’s newest appellations, the Coteaux de Vendômoise. While the appellation is technically new, viticulture here is ancient. Colin farms several old parcels of ancestral varietals, including Pineaud’Aunis, an ancient red grape from which chenin blanc developed. He makes Perles Grises from Pineaud’Aunis using the traditional method champenois, a very labor-intensive process requiring secondary fermentation in the bottle. Inexpensive and refreshing, and a bargain at $18.99, it is a unique sparkling wine. With a bright and fresh concentration of vibrant red fruits and slight pepper on the palate, this is the ideal aperitif wine.

Pairs well with oysters, snacks, like popcorn, and all fried foods. $18.99

Domaine Jean TeillerMenetou-Salon Blanc2018, France

Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc Alc.13%

Domaine Jean Tellier is a family-owned winery that was founded in the 1950s. The domaine covers an area of 18 hectares and is located on the best slopes of the communes of Menetou-Salon, Parassy, Aubinges, and Vignoux sous les Aix; 11 hectares are planted with Sauvignon Blanc and 7 with Pinot Noir. Teiller has been certified organic since 2017, and has not used any pesticides, chemical fertilizers or weed killers since 2010. All grapes are harvested by hand and then fermented using mostly indigenous yeasts and in mainly stainless steel. This white wine comes from vines grown on shallow clay and limestone soils within the communes of Menetou-Salon, Parassy, and Aubinges. Notes of citrus fruit, along with some peach, flowers, and savory herbs on the nose lead to a good balance on the palate in which the fruit is uplifted by the acidity and a long finish. (This is my favorite Sauvignon Blanc in the store)!

An excellent aperitif.  Pairs well with shellfish, fish, chicken, cold salads, or goat cheese. $25.99

Les Equilibristes Hirsute 2020, Bergerac, France

Varietal: 70% Semillon, 20% Sauvignon Blanc, 10% Chenin Blanc Alc.13.5%

Les Equilibristes is a collective of winegrowers who work together to create new blends of grape, focused on neglected varietals. It is a collaborative process, from choosing the site to final bottling. Their ground rules are to use grapes from great terroir, practice organic methods, with minimal intervention in the cellar, and minimal use of sulfur. Hirsute is organic and biodynamic. It is golden in color and has hints of citrus and herbs on the nose. On the palate notes of orange and melon mingle with a zesty minerality.

Pairs well with risotto, octopus, and other seafood. $18.99

Maysara Arsheen Pinot Gris 2019, McMinnville, Oregon

Varietal: Pinot GrisAlc.12%

The owners of the Montazi vineyard and Maysara Winery are committed to capturing the true expression of the land and conveying it through their wine. They practice low-impact, holistic farming methods in their certified biodynamic vineyard and carry this philosophy into the cellar, where their biodynamic winemaking practices produce elegant wines that maintain the harmony between fruit and earth. A tantalizing perfume of lemon meringue, honey dew, and lavender enters the nose before you take the first sip of the Arsheen Pinot Gris. On the palate, flavors of apple, honeysuckle, and a hint of marzipan are followed by a crisp, clean finish.

Pairs well with salads, pasta dishes with fresh herbs, and fish. $22.99

Maysara Jamsheed Pinot Noir 2014, McMinnville, Oregon, Varietal: Pinot Noir Alc.13.5%

The owners of the Montazi vineyard and Maysara wines believe in holding vintages until the wine is fully evolved, rather than releasing chronologically. They believe each vintage is unique and should mature on its own timeline. The 2014 Pinot Noir was fermented with 100 percent native yeast and underwent malolactic fermentation. It was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels (10% new, 90% neutral). Violet and cherry aromas on the nose lead to raspberry, blackberry, black tea, and fresh cracked pepper on the palate and lengthy tannins on the finish. Delicious!

Pairs well with dark fowl, grilled meats or salmon, and caramelized vegetables. $34.99

Montepeloso A Quo, 2020, Tuscany, Italy

Varietals: 30% Montepulciano, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese, 10% Marselan, 14.5% Alicante Bouschet Alc. 12%

The Montepeloso estate is nestled in the hills of Suvereto near Bolgheri above the famed Tua Rita site on the Tuscan Coast – one of the hottest areas in Tuscany. The hot climate often produces over-concentrated wines, presenting a challenge to winemakers. Estate owner and winemaker Swiss-born Fabio Chiarelotto tackled this by overhauling his vineyards in 1997 – retraining, pruning, and regrafting many vines. He now grows all of his grapes biodynamically. Today, Montepeloso has few rivals on the Tuscan coast producing wines of elegance, refinement, and complexity. In the cellar, he does fairly short macerations, employs natural yeasts during fermentation, and never filters his wine. The blend of grapes makes for a complex yet balanced wine. The nose is dominated by dark red fruits and herbal notes, intermixed with spicy aromas and mineral notes. On the palate hints of black fruits and aromatic woods combine with a fine minerality.

Pairs well with paté, grilled beef or pork, or a hearty stew. $24.99

While you’re in the store, take a look at some of the new beers we have: Maine Beer’s flagship IPA, Lunch, another Maine Beer favorite, Peeper, a smooth pale ale with hints of citrus and some malt sweetness; and one of the best Belgian-style white beers this side of Belgium, Allagash White — made with coriander and curaçao orange peel, it’s lovely on a hot summer day.

FINE WINE TASTING @ SAVOUR WITH ANTHONY SCIARAPPA OF CAROLINA WINES

Anthony Sciarappa, from Carolina wines, has been in the industry for several years, coming to Carolina wines from years as a restaurant chef. He therefore is well-versed in food and wine pairing, so feel free to ask his opinion on whatever you are preparing for your next culinary feast. Carolina is a division of Martignetti and carries specialty portfolios from some of the great importers, including Kermit Lynch and Louis Dressner. Join us this Saturday to taste wines from three great American wineries of the Pacific Northwest, a balanced, aromatic Sauvignon Blanc from South Africa, and two French classics.

                                                                Kathleen

WINES

Argyle 2017 Brut, Willamette Valley, Oregon

Varietals: 55% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir, 15% Pinot Meunier Alc. 12.5

The 2017 sparkling wine vintage in the Willamette Valley was full of beautiful natural acidity thanks to a classically cool September harvest. Grapes from Knudsen Vineyard, protected in the deep volcanic soils of the Dundee Hills, bring supple depth and elegance, while grapes from Spirit Hill Vineyard, in the windy and rocky volcanic soils of the Eola-Amity Hills, bring spicy minerality. Elegantly expressive citrus flavors take on mineral and fresh ginger notes on the way toward a vibrant finish.

Wonderful as an aperitif or pairs well with shrimp and shellfish, salmon, rich cheeses, and charcuterie. $27.99

Sincerely Sauvignon Blanc, Western Cape, South Africa

Varietals: 88% Sauvignon Blanc, 12% SemillonAlc.13%

Neil Ellis is a South African wine industry icon and one of the early pioneers to bring quality levels up to world-class standards. He founded his winery in 1993 with the philosophy of sourcing grapes from the top growers of the Jonkershoek Valley region. Neil owns vineyards and sources grapes from the regions of Stellenbosch, Darling, Darbanville, and Elgin to produce the well balanced and easy to drink wines under the Sincerely label. This Sauvignon Blanc pours a pale straw-like color with attractive greenish hues. On the nose, it has bright tropical aromatics, with subtle citrus. The palate is elegant with delicately detailed sweet tropical fruits and a lively acidity, refined minerality, and a long finish.

Pairs well with roasted chicken, ceviche, oysters, smoked salmon. Or a salad with citrus fruit. $14.99

PépièreLa Pepie Muscadet Sevre-Et-Maine ‘’Merci,’’ Loire Valley, France

Varietal: Melon de BourgogneAlc.12%

After yet another devastating frost destroyed more than 80% of Domaine de la Pépière’s 2021 crop, they floated the idea of doing a one-off vintage to help them get by financially. “Cuvée Merci” simply translates to “thank you.” Two friends, from whom Pépière already buys grapes to make their La Pépie vintage, agreed to sell them finished 2020 wine from similar terroirs so they could have something to sell. The winemakers selected their favorite tanks to make Merci. The wine has all the characteristics of a quality Muscadet: crisp, dry, mineral, pleasant acidity and a long rich finish from sur-lie aging.

Pairs well with Moules Frites, shrimp, shellfish, Gruyere cheese, and Brie. $19.99

Domaine de la Fontsainte

Varietals: 90% Grenache Gris, 5% Carignan, 5% Mouvèdre, Alc.13.5%

The first vineyards at Domaine de Fontsainte, in the Corbières appellation, were planted by the Romans. Artifacts found in these vineyards, such as an old coin dating from the time of Marcus Agrippa in 25 A.D., are a testament to its antiquity. The original domain was built around a thermal spring, which was later named for the local, twelfth-century patron saint, Saint Siméon; hence Fontsainte—the saint’s fount. Yves Laboucarié’s family has been making wine here since the seventeenth century. The Fontsainte vineyards surround the hamlet of Boutenac in the area known as “The Golden Crescent.” This swath of land is one of the sunniest in the appellation of Corbières, enjoying south-southeast exposure, and protection from the cold, northeast winds by a large 500-hectare forest. The cooler sea breezes from the Mediterranean help this sun-soaked terroir achieve balance as well. A full-bodied and lush wine, brimming with strawberry summer fruit, but dry and crisp.

Pairs well with shrimp cocktail and salad Niçoise. $17.99

Roco Gravel Road Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon

Varietals : Pinot Noir Alc. 14%

The hills in the Willamette Valley are punctuated by gravel roads, which lead to the region’s finest vineyards. Roco’s Gravel Road Pinot Noir is a blend of grapes from several of these distinctive vineyards. An outstanding value, the Gravel Road Pinot Noir flavor profile surpasses many other wineries flagship Pinot Noirs. The old-world style offers bold flavor with balance and grace to pair well with nearly any food. ROCO Gravel Road Pinot Noir NV is a conjunction of the 2019 and 2020 vintage. This non-vintage Pinot Noir truly is “greater than the sum of its parts.”

The elegant poise of the 2019 vintage is layered with a minority of the robust concentration of 2020’s personality. The combination of these two very different vintages gives a masterful expression of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir.

Pairs well with mushroom dishes, pork, turkey, or grilled asparagus wrapped in prosciutto. $29.99

Savour Saturday Wine tasting – Germany and Austria

THIS SATURDAY, August 13, 2 – 4 pm COMPLIMENTARY

FINE WINE TASTING @ SAVOUR WITH OWNER KATHLEEN MORGAN, FEATURING FAVORITES OF GERMANY AND AUSTRIA

Regular customers probably know how much I love Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. In fact, I will be pouring 2 of my all-time favorite Rieslings, one from Austria, Lagler Smaragd, and a 2015 (yes, aged) Riesling from one of the top Riesling vineyards in the world, Graacher-Himmelreich (translated – “Kingdom of Heaven”), made on the German estate of Eifel-Pfeiffer. Most people do not know that Riesling is the most age-worthy varietal, which is why I drink mine aged. Ageing up to 30 years creates a stony, complex, honeyed and heady wine. Drink this one cold on a summer day or put it away for Thanksgiving dinner – nothing better!  Along with these two gems, we have my favorite rosé, made from Austrian Zweigelt, a glorious sparkling Grüner Veltliner, a German red, perfect for chilling, a zesty German Pinot Gris, value-priced at $14.99, and a classic still Grüner from Kremstal, Austria. These wines are often overlooked so don’t miss the chance to come down and try something new on “the road not taken.”

WINES

Stift Klosterneuburg Grüner Veltliner Brut NV, Austria

Varietal: GrünerVeltliner Alc.12%

The Klosterneuburg wine estate was founded in 1114, when, legend  has it, during the wedding, his bride’s wedding veil was blown off by a gust of wind; Leopold vowed to build a monastery where the veil was found. That spot became the Klosterneuburg Monastery, a religious and cultural center, and the location around which Stift Klosterneuburg has been making wines for more than 900 years. In the modern era, Stift Klosterneuburg is a pioneer in sustainability and climate protection; in 2009 it became Europe’s first carbon-neutral winery. The Grüner Veltliner Brut pours nearly clear with frothy, medium-sized bubbles. Aromas of green apple, pears, and lemon zest mingle with a subtle white pepper note. On the palate, pear and apple mingle with peaches and give way to a dry, yeasty finish.

Pairs well with seared tuna and sushi. $19.99

Hermann Moser Grüner Veltliner Gebling, Kremstal, Austria

Varietals: Grüner Veltliner Alc.12.5%

Weingut Hermann Moser is run by Martin and his wife Carmen Moser, the 26th generation of the family producing wine from the family vineyards. The estate is nearly 400 years old and is located in the village of Rohrendorf in the Kremstal wine-growing region of Lower Austria. Martin is a member of the Traditions Weingüter Österreich association (Traditional Austrian Wineries Association). The association was founded in 1992 and is composed of 23 growers who have together created a single level classification of 52 of their best single vineyards in the four Danube regions: namely, Kremstal, Kamptal, Traisental and Wagram. On the nose, this wine is fruity and flowery, with notes of spice and citrus. It is crisp and luscious on the palate.

Pairs well with vegetarian dishes, pork, chicken, and cured meats. $21.99

Villa Wolf 2020 Pinot Gris, Pfalz, Germany

Varietal: Pinot GrisAlc.12.5%

Founded in 1756, the Villa Wolf winery was a successful and highly regarded wine estate for more than two centuries.  Ernst Loosen, owner of Dr. Loosen, took over the winery in 1996, launching a dramatic revival of the estate’s quality and reputation. The Villa Wolf varietal line-up features exceptionally affordable, classic Pfalz wines made from traditional grape varieties. The Pfalz (aka ‘Palatinate’) region is in the Rhine River valley in southwest Germany. Because it is one

of the warmer and drier areas of cool-climate Germany, wine grapes do quite well here, where it is possible to achieve full ripeness in every vintage. The goal at Villa Wolf is to produce wines that express the pure, authentic terroir of the Pfalz. Made in the classic style of the Pfalz, Villa Wolf Rieslings are drier and more full-bodied than Mosel Rieslings, with fully ripe fruit flavors and a characteristic stoniness in the aroma.

The Pinot Gris grape variety was first vinified separately in the Pfalz region, and Germany is second only to Italy in acres planted. Villa Wolf Pinot Gris is made in a combination of large, neutral oak casks for depth and complexity; concrete tanks for a rounded texture; and stainless steel to preserve freshness and enhance the vibrant fruit. It is made in a full-bodied, dry style with fresh, unoaked fruit and a crisp texture.

Pairs well with salmon, chicken, pork or savory vegetarian dishes. $14.99

Weingut Lagler 2020 Ried 1000 Eimerberg Smaragd Riesling, Wachau, Austria

Varietals :Riesling Alc. 13%

The Lagler family has lived on the beautiful estate at Rote Torgasse since 1789. Yet it was only in the late 1970s that the Laglers decided to go from winegrowing to winemaking. Instead of selling his grapes, Karl Lagler began producing first class, fruit-driven wines from old vines planted on terraces of marble, gneiss, and granite combined with natural farming techniques, yielding excellent results. All work is done by hand, including harvest. Today, Karl Lagler Jr is crafting some of the most exciting wines of this area in the family’s tradition of producing wines of purity and definition that are respected worldwide. This Riesling has wonderful ripe apricot and plum notes on the nose with a lime zestiness. On the palate, it is round and fruity, with ripe, mild acidity.

Pairs well with pork, shellfish, spicy food, and cured meats. $37.99

Eifel-Pfeiffer Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Feinherb 2016, Mosel, Germany

Varietal: RieslingAlc.10.5%

Eifel-Pfeiffer has been dedicated to the cultivation of wine, especially Riesling, since 1642. The winery’s vines grow in an ideal microclimate in the steep slate slopes that slope down to the Moselle. The fine slate, mineral weathering soils offer wonderful conditions for the Riesling. Heinz Eifel’s decades of experience and the inspiration of oenologist Anne Eifel-Spohr combine to form a future-oriented family winemaking team. Rieslings with an individual character are the result of this philosophy. This almost clear colored Riesling from the Mosel opens with a gentle pineapple bouquet. On the palate, it is medium bodied, nicely balanced, round, and juicy. Flavors of Asian pear and lemon blend with hints of minerality and a dash of white pepper. The finish is off-dry and nicely refreshing.

Pairs well with Asian foodchicken, and cured meats. $14.99

Schloss Gobelsburg Cistercien Rosé, Austria

Varietals: Zweigelt, St. Laurent, Pinot Noir Alc. 12%

SCHLOSS GOBELSBURG, a Cistercian monastic estate, is one of the oldest wineries in the Austrian Danube area with a documented history that dates back to 1171. All the vineyards are located on slopes and terraces around the valley of the river Kamp near the town of Langenlois and the village of Gobelsburg. The valley of the Danube and its side-valleys belong to the cool climate areas of Austria. Some vineyards are even too cold for red wine making. Zweigelt, St. Laurent, and Pinot Noir grapes grown in the cooler sites of Gobelsburg and Langenlois are used for the Cistercien Rosé. The Rosé CISTERCIEN shows a lovely fresh pink and offers a clear and fresh, subtle fruit and lovely zesty bouquet of red and white fruits. Medium-bodied, with lovely acidity and zippy on the palate. The Cistercien Rosé drinks like a white wine and is a lovely pairing for everything that asks for freshness and more acidity. Pairs well with shrimp, crab, lobster, salmon, and crab cakes. $18.99

Roterfaden & Rosswag Co-op “Terraces” Red 2019, Germany

Varietals: Lemberger, Trollinger, Regent, Schwarzriesling Alc.12.5%

The Roterfaden & Rosswagred blend comes from grapes grown in terraced vineyards well over 1,000 years old covering nearly 15 acres. This site in southern Germany is also an official nature preserve. The Roterfaden winery joined with the co-op of the town of Rosswag to work these terraced vineyards to make this unique red blend.   Pairs well with salmon, roast chicken, and pork and vegetarian dishes featuring mushrooms. $29.99

While you’re in the store, take a look at some of the new beers we have for summer: a citrusy saison from Cambridge Brewing Company called Working Class Hero; an NEIPA from Riverwalk Brewing called Hit of Haze, and one of the best Belgian-style white beers this side of Belgium, Allagash White — made with coriander and curaçao orange peel, it’s lovely on a hot summer day.

Located in Bergheim next to Ribeauvillé, in the heart of the Grand Cru area, the Marcel Deiss estate was founded in 1947. Currently managed by Mathieu Deiss with the help of his father, Jean-Michel, the estate aims for quality based on terroir rather than on cloned grape varieties; the winemakers adhere to biodynamic methods of very low yields and agroforestry. This wine comes exclusively from the vineyards of Domaine Marcel Deiss. It is made with the 13 varieties of grapes that represent the Alsace AOC, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Sylvaner, and Muscat. The wine expresses the depth of the Alsatian terroir. Steinbock Riesling

Varietal: RieslingAlc.11%

Chateau Puech-Haut Argali Rosé, Languedoc, France

Varietals : 60% Grenache, 40% Cinsault Alc. 13%

Languedoc is one of the most exciting regions in France right now. Château Puech-Haut is a prestigious estate in the eastern Languedoc producing top quality wines for very reasonable prices. The wines from Puech-Haut are rich and lush but also show the earthy and mineral character of the rocky clay-limestone soils of the region. They benefit from both its proximity to the Mediterranean and the rugged, mountainous interior. The Argali Rosé pours a pale pink color and has a complex citrus nose. It offers clean, crisp notes of white peach, strawberries, and hint of flowers on the palate. Lovely as an aperitif. Pairs well with rice dishes, Mediterranean cuisine, salads, and vegetables.$24.99

Averaen 2019 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir AVA, Oregon

Varietal: Pinot Noir Alc.13.6%

The seeds of Averaen winery were sown at the International Pinot Noir Celebration in 2013 in the Willamette Valley. The winemakers from Banshee Wines in Sonoma were struck by the similarities between the cold, foggy Sonoma coast and the Willamette Valley, and realized making high-quality Pinot Noir in the Willamette Valley would be far less expensive than in Sonoma. The first Averaen Pinot Noir was released in 2015 to high praise, and they have continued to produce fine Pinot Noir ever since. The 2019 Averaen Pinot Noir is juicy, with flavors of dark cherry, cranberry, and blackberry. Black tea, anise, blood orange, and vanilla accents add complexity. The texture is ripe and plush with a line of acid running through. Pairs well with seared salmon or tuna, mushroom dishes, pulled pork, and barbecue. $22.99

I Greppi Greppicante Bolgheri Rosso 2018,Tuscany, Italy

Varietals: 60% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon Alc. 14%

Bolgheri is a relatively young yet prestigious Italian appellation located in the Maremma on the Tuscan coast and named after a town in the north of the region. It is known mainly for deeply colored, supple yet age-worthy red wines, usually based on the Bordeaux grape varieties. Until the 1970s, the area was regarded elsewhere in Tuscany as a swampy zone producing nondescript white wines and rosés, and better suited to other farming, in contrast to the prime Tuscan vineyards further up in the hills. Then in 1978, in a blind tasting arranged by Decanter magazine, a wine from Bolgheri beat out several Bordeauxs. Ever since, the reputation of the area has grown. The Greppicante Bolgheri Rosso has aromas of currants and blackberries and hints of rosemary and flowers on the nose. On the palate, it is full-bodied, with lush fruit, rich meat, and leather flavors and a long finish.

Pairs well with foods in rich sauces, stews, duck, veal, and mature cheeses.$29.99
