Savour Saturday Wine tasting – Mexican Wines

THIS SATURDAY,ย July 23, 2 – 4 pm
COMPLIMENTARY
FINE WINE TASTING @ SAVOUR WITHย MAX MURPHY, OWNER TOZI IMPORTS

We at Savour are very excited to introduce you to some incredible wines from Mexico with the owner of the importing and distribution company, Tozi Imports. But first, a great story . . . Tozi was born out of love. First, sommelier Max Murphy fell in love with a woman from Mexico. When he visited Mexico with her, he fell in love with the wine. Max and Kenya married in Mexico, and Max chose Mexican wines to serve at the wedding. When Max’s family and friends clamored to buy the wedding wines back home, the idea for a wine importing business was born. Come meet Max and let him introduce you to some of his favorite wines.

The first three wines come from the state of Querรฉtaro in Central Mexico, 6,500 feet above sea level. This is the southernmost wine region in the Northern Hemisphere. The area is extremely hot, dry, and has a 40-degree diurnal shift. Central Mexican red wines tend to have a lower ABV (alcohol by volume) and higher acid than wines from Baja.ย This makes them wonderful food wines!

NV Viรฑa Doรฑa Dolores Brut Reserva

Varietals: 50% Macabeu, 50% Xarel-lo

Made using the traditional champagne method, this lively sparkling wine sits for 18 to 24 months on the lees, followed by 1 year in the riddling rack and 1 year of bottle aging. It has strong stone fruit and tropical fruit notes with a crisp, dry finish. $17.99 โ€“ great bargain for such a labor-intensive wine!

2019 Vivante Tinto

Varietal: Malbec

Fermented in stainless steel and immediately bottled, this wine has notes of bright red cherries, plums, and hibiscus. It is fruit forward and very barbeque friendly. Can be served slightly chilled. $14.99

2018 Viรฑa Doรฑa Dolores Cuatro Regiones Red Blend

Varietals: 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Tempranillo, 20% Merlot, 10% Syrah, 10% Malbec, 3% Marselan

Aged for 16 months in American and French Oak, this wine is meant to represent all of Central Mexico. The winemakers source grapes from the four wine-producing states (hence Cuatro Regiones) of Querรฉtaro, Guanajuato, Aguascalientes, and Zacatecas. This is a medium to full-bodied red blend with complex flavors of dark red and black fruits, leather, and tobacco. $17.99

These next three wines come from the Valle De Guadalupe in Baja. This is Mexico’s version of Napa Valley and is where 80% of all Mexican wine is produced. There are more than 150 wineries, and the valley sits 15 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean with low hills to the west and high hills to the east. It is classified as a Mediterranean climate and sits at a point where two tectonic plates meet — the soil is a mix of sand, clay, and granite.

2017 Vinos Lechuza Chardonnay

Varietal: Chardonnay

Fermented in stainless steel, this wine sits for 9 months on the lees. It also undergoes partial malolactic fermentation, resulting in a pleasant creamy texture, without the use of oak. The lees provide brioche notes along with honeydew melon, pineapple, and green apple. $34.99

2018 EmevรฉArmonia de Tintos Red Blend

Varietals: 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc, 25% Merlot, 25% Shiraz

This wine sees 12 months in new French oak. Full-bodied with notes of blackberries, blueberries, and plums, it also has a pleasing vanilla finish and is very crowd friendly. $29.99

2019 Monte Xanic Cabernet Sauvignon

Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Aged for 12 months in second use (more neutral) French oak barrels, this is a medium to full-bodied Cabernet with notes of plum, cassis, and baking spice with soft, velvety tannins.ย $29.99

Now, a word about beer . . .

While youโ€™re in the store, take a look at some of the new beers we have for summer: a citrusy saison from Cambridge Brewing Company called Working Class Hero; an NEIPA from Riverwalk Brewing called Hit of Haze, and one of the best Belgian style white beers this side of Belgium, Allagash White — made with coriander and curaรงao orange peel, itโ€™s lovely on a hot summer day! Ann Cortissoz, our new beer expert, is now making our selections and can help you find exactly the right choice for the beach, a summer gathering on the deck, or a barbeque in the backyard. What a great way to celebrate this joyful season on glorious Cape Ann!

THIS SATURDAY, JULY 16, 2 โ€“ 4 PM COMPLIMENTARY FINE WINE TASTING @ SAVOUR WITH OWNER KATHLEEN MORGAN

Thereโ€™s something about summer that makes us want to drink pink wine. I donโ€™t mean that sickly sweet stuff that some of us remember from the โ€˜70s and โ€˜80s. Modern rosรฉs are crisp, light, flavorful, and dry. And they are perfect for a summer afternoon or evening on the porch, the beach, or the boat. Iโ€™ve picked out five rosรฉs for this weekโ€™s tasting, which means that along with the four rosรฉs available to taste on our wine tasting machine, youโ€™ll be able to taste nine rosรฉs on Saturday. Come down and find your favorite!ย โ€” Kathleen

Wines

Casa Canevel Proseco Rosรฉ DOC, Treviso, Italy

Varietals: 85%Glera,15 % pinot noir, Alc. 11%. Located in the finest region for the production of Prosecco, Valdobbiadene, Casa Canevel (meaning small cellar) graces the table with this shimmering rosรฉ spumante. Casa Canevel produces refined sparkling wines from the local Glera grape. The rosรฉ pours a light, golden pink and is fizzy in the glass. Aromas of strawberries, grapefruit, and apples are followed by an elegant acidity and fruit nuances on the palate. Perfect as an aperitif, the wine also pairs well with hors dโ€™oeuvres, fish, and poultry. $17.99

Chateau de Campuget Rosรฉ, Nimes, France

Varietals: 30%Grenache noir, 70% Syrah Alc.13% The Chรขteau de Campuget is above all the adventure of a family from the North who came to settle during the World War II, not far from the Mediterraneanโ€ฆ in the Costiรจres de Nรฎmes. Since 1942, a single objective of Chateau Campuget has been to produce Great Wines of the Rhone Valley while respecting terroir and identity. The rolled pebbles of the Rhรดne, the sun of the South, the Mistral, the Syrah, the Grenache are some fundamental elements that make up the identity of Campuget. Domaine de Campuget dates back to 1640, but they make a very modern rosรฉ. Its color is peony pink, with aromas of red berries and currants. On the palate, raspberry and strawberry flavors blend with a crisp acidity to make a very refreshing glass of wine. Pairs well with picnic foods and anything from the grill. $14.99

Domaine de Capreoles Cossinelle, Beaujolais Villages, France. Varietal: Gamay Alc. 13% Capreoles means vine tendrils, and references the history and tradition of the vertical growth of the vine, the connections between growers and of the relationship to the earth, which is solid granite under the vineyard soil. This family-owned vineyard practices organic farming, and they named their rosรฉ after the ladybugs (cossinelles) their daughter found in the vineyard during their first harvest. The wine is pale pink, with delicate peach and strawberry notes on the nose and palate. Pairs well with summer salads, seafood, and soft cheeses. $19.99

Herdade do Rocim Mariana 2021, Alentejo, Portugal

Varietals: Touriga Nacional, Aragonez, Alc.12.5%

Herdade do Rocim is located in the Lower Alentejo region of southern Portugal. The estate was founded in 2000 with the aim of focusing primarily on native varietals. Since purchasing the estate, Catarina Vieira and Pedro Ribeiro have completely regenerated the vineyards and built a new, state-of-the art winery. They planted higher-quality varietals, indigenous and local varieties, and also some international grapes, such as Syrah and Cabernet. They have also recently started to produce olive oil from 90-year-old trees, with the intention of recapturing the traditions of the region. The organic Mariana rosรฉ is a delicate pink color, with red and blue berries on the nose and palate. It is medium-bodied and dry, with an earthy finish, and has good tannic structure, and balanced acidity. Pairs well with fish, shellfish, and pizza. $17.99

Domaine de Fontsainte Gris de Gris Rosรฉ, (Kermit Lynch Selection) Corbiรจres, France. Varietals: 90% Grenache Gris, 5% Carignan, 5% Mouvรจdre, Alc. 12.5% The first vineyards at Domaine de Fontsainte, in the Corbiรจres appellation, were planted by the Romans. Artifacts found in these vineyards, such as an old coin dating from the time of Marcus Agrippa in 25 A.D., are a testament to its antiquity. The original domain was built around a thermal spring, which was later named for the local, twelfth-century patron saint, Saint Simรฉon; hence Fontsainteโ€”the saintโ€™s fount. Yves Laboucariรฉโ€™s family has been making wine here since the seventeenth century. The Fontsainte vineyards surround the hamlet of Boutenac in the area known as โ€œThe Golden Crescent.โ€ This swath of land is one of the sunniest in the appellation of Corbiรจres, enjoying south-southeast exposure, and protection from the cold, northeast winds by a large 500-hectare forest. The cooler sea breezes from the Mediterranean help this sun-soaked terroir achieve balance as well. A full-bodied and lush wine, brimming with strawberry summer fruit, but dry and crisp. Pairs well with shrimp cocktail and salad Niรงoise. $17.99

Poggio le Volpi Frascati Superiore โ€œPeople,โ€ Lazio, Italy
Varietals: Trebbiano, Malvasia, Alc. %12

Poggio Le Volpi is a family-owned winery that occupies an area between the slopes of Monte Porzio Catone and the Roman countryside, an area where grape vines have grown for centuries. “People” is a great expression of the Lazio appellation. It is a versatile wine to accompany everyday dishes, and a wine to share with friends, intended for all types of palates. Pale and bright straw yellow in the glass, it exudes a fruity aroma full of pear, green apple and grape, mixed with white flowers and cut grass. The wineโ€™s taste is fresh and flavorful, with a pleasant acidity and a clean finish.
Excellent as an aperitif, It.  Pairs well: with seafood appetizers, risottos, vegetable soups, steamed fish and Thai chicken. โ€ฆ.$14.99

Tenuta Argentiera Poggio Ai Ginepri Vermentino, Tuscany, Italy
Varietal: Vermentino 90%, Sauvignon blanc 10 % Alc. 12.5%

The Argentiera estate covers 200 acres of breathtakingly beautiful Tuscan coast, southwest of Florence. Argentiera is close to the sea and at a high altitude, making the land especially well-suited to growing grapes. The estate is considered among the most beautiful in Italy with its spectacular view of the islands of the Tuscan archipelago. The estateโ€™s Vermentino is an intense straw yellow in color. The nose has fruit-forward notes of pear, banana, and apricot. On the palate, floral tones of lavender and white flowers mix with an herbaceousness defined by wild sage. On the palate, the wine is fresh and easy drinking; truly well balanced. A long, flavorful finish is pronounced by aromatics and definitive minerality.  Pairs well: with most seafood dishes, from freshly shucked oysters to fried clams or battered fish tacos. It also pairs well with vegetables and is one of the few wines that pairs well with artichokes!  $24.99

Ippolito 1845 160 Anni, Calabria, Italy
Varietal: Gaglioppo, Alc. 15%

This wine was created to celebrate the history of the company, which was founded in 1845. The greatness of the Gaglioppo grape together with the company’s desire to innovate have given rise to a unique wine. The best bunches of Gaglioppo, manually selected, are left to dry on racks until the end of November and then the relative pomace macerates with wine from fresh grapes. The wine pours ruby with garnet flashes. Macerated red fruit aromas, woodsy tones, licorice, mixed with dried flowers, wild herbs, balsamic notes, and tree bark on the nose. Fullness, and great tannic structure is balanced by a marked marine flavor and a citrus freshness. It finishes on notes of cocoa and cinchona, sweet spices and red fruit.  Pairs well: with succulent meats, red meat sauces, aged cheeses and cured meatsโ€ฆ.  $27.99

Coppi Siniscalco Primitivo, Puglia, Italy
Varietal: Primitivo, Alc. 13.5%

The Coppi winery sits on the hills of the Murgia dei Trulli, a site that has been a winery since 1882. Primitivo, like Zinfandel, is a descendant of Croatia’s Crljenak Kaลกtelanski. Primitivo is mostly grown in the southern Italian province of Puglia. Since its links relating it to California’s Zinfandel surfaced, plantings have increased significantly. Primitivo is more rustic in character – albeit in a charming way- when compared to its trans-Atlantic cousin. Coppiโ€™s Primitivo is vivid red in the glass. It has a very fruity nose with cherry notes. On the palate, it is dry, quite fresh and structured, fruity, and full-bodied. Pairs well: with ham, meatballs with cream sauce, sausage and potatoes, venison, cold cuts, and matured cheeses.โ€ฆ $17.99

Leitz Riesling, Rheingau, Germany
Varietals:
ย Riesling, Alc. 12%
The Rheingau is a small region between the cities of Mainz and Rรผdesheim. The Rheingau was once the home to some of the worldโ€™s most sought-after wines, but after World War II the quality fell dramatically. Johannes Leitz took over his family vineyard in 1985 and has work ever since to bring his native terroir back to its former glory. He is focused on farming as sustainably as possible and working by hand. This Riesling pungent with lemony fruit. It is off-dry with a satiny mouthfeel, crisp acidity on the palate with flavors of peach, lemon, and minerals, and a clean finish.

Her Wishing Clock sauvignon blanc is light, almost clear, in the glass, with aromas of lemon, citrus, guava, and herbs in the nose. On the palate notes of exotic fruit mingle with herbs; the mouthfeel is soft, but the finish is very dry.

The 2020 vintage is made with grapes from Epiphany Vineyard in McLaren Vale. This shiraz is full of aromas of ripe fruit, some spice bouquet, violets, fresh green herbs, star anise, and eucalyptus. On the palate you get plum, blackberry, oak, ripe blackberry, red berry jam, cocoa, herbs, and toasted nut flavors.ย These flavors are all held together in a smooth tannic grip, making it an extremely drinkable wine right now but can be cellared up to 10 years.

Pairs well:ย with an eggplant laksa, a barbecued chicken, grilled meat, or blue cheese. $21.99
